Dead Poets Society

1989
Drama
2h 8m
Painfully shy Todd Anderson has been sent to the school where his popular older brother was valedictorian. His room-mate, Neil, although exceedingly bright and popular, is very much under the thumb of his overbearing father. The two, along with their other friends, meet Professor Keating, their new English teacher, who tells them of the Dead Poets Society, and encourages them to go against the status quo. Each, in their own way, does this, and are changed for life. (imdb)

A reasonable life inspirational flick that falls flat from it's hokey heart. Sure it's there but it can get cheesy after a while. It's intellectual quoting is kind of interesting but dwindles as we come to expect someones really patting themselves on the back or otherwise for it. It tried to make me care for prissy boarding school prep kids and failed but I did come away with the thought that it tried. Cinematography poor. No great shots. Robin delivers. A lesser effort for gus. Nuff said.

"We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."

I will never ever be objective about this movie. I will never talk about the well or poorly it was filmed or that the setting of scenes is hyper realistic. This is movie for when you're sixteen believe in everything but yourself, find day and night shifting magical and everything is so very puzzling.

After achingly awaiting for the film to roll out its ostensibly predictable conclusion, I had a revelatory contention. The crux, the zenith, the crest of the stilted arrangement comprised only the first hour of the film. In a mawkish flash after absorbing an outburst of substance, the film for me ended, period. Laterally, the sole purpose in any continual viewing was to observe through an aperture remaining factors of fecundity. The rest was a glib and mottled plunge into glossed inertia.

Its a great watch for anyone really, but I reckon teenagers would absolutely adore it. Seeing the boys have such fun even in such a strict environment is comforting to watch in a way. Stunning visuals, subtle music really adds to all this too.Not to forget how quotable it is! Mr. Keating teaching not only the beauty of literature and poetry but also about life and passion, to 'Carpe Diem'.. wow.

Robin William's best. Unfortunately the movie spins out of control nearing the end, but for some reason, I still love it. The fact that I first watched this when I was in high school may have had something to do with it.

Typical "great teacher vs. the world" flick. Not bad overall but I struggled with the pacing, especially in the first half. The romanticized idealism was sometimes suffocating.

One of the all-time best movies ever created, this film touches the heart, warms the soul, and fills you with the desire to better yourself. A human drama of the lives and loves and pains of teenage schoolboys with a touch of humor and a touch of philosophy bring out the poet in us all. The compelling story, rich characters, and excellent directing will leave you shouting from your desktop "Oh captain, my captain!"

I'd probably prefer youth films like this to have more openly mundane approach from start. Maybe the title made me wish for something more imaginative, or being deep in somehow different way. It's likely a good film if you can take it as it is. Memorable it is at least: I can remember it pretty well years after seeing it once. Poems don't need to be complex to be beautiful. It's just all about who hears them and gets them.

Incredibly moving story. A strict school with high standards of professionalism with no care to individuality, freedom and love. The school cares only about reputation, image and wealth. Williams character is here to inspire us to "Seize the day!" and to make the most of every moment presented to us. To ask ourselves how we FEEL about something and encouraging us to be ourselves and to just enjoy life. Enjoy love. Enjoy each other. And in those you will succeed in happiness. Amazing film.

There was lots of potential in this one and mostly it is done really well; youthful empathy can be really shaped against conformity easily and the results are always there even if they do differ or are tragic. What really hit me hard though was the ending, which was as sweet as a glass full of sugar. I mean, really, that was the best they could do? Oh captain, go f**k yourself, thy fearful trip is done, and the poem fits better than standing up on the desks. Go figure.
