Brakhage said that this "traces (as best I'm able) the hypnagogic after-effect of psychological cathexis as designated by Freud". I don't know what those two-dollar words mean, and I don't care; it was a bad idea to base even a 3-minute film on Freud, 'cause his ideas are getting replaced more and more in contemporary psychology, as they just weren't very testable. That being said, I still appreciate Brakhage's kaleidoscope imagery

I tend to react to Brakhage's hand-painted films on a purely aesthetic level. This one isn't as "pretty" to me as the others, nor do I quite understand what he was shooting for.

For a film that consists of a string of scratched out colours I was surprised to find myself interested and almost getting something out of it. Almost.

Wikipedia says that cathexis is the investment of mental or emotional energy in an object or idea, and I found it difficult to do that for more than 30 seconds of this video. On the plus side, if you've ever wanted to look through a kaleidoscope but were too lazy to lift one up to your eye, you can always watch this instead.

It's like three minutes of everything at once. This is a beautifully pained Brakhage short, with colours and scratches bursting out like 3-D characters, combating for screen-time with the claustrophobic lighting/optical effects, pitting chaos and frustration against each other and with each other.

One of the best I've seen by Brakhage.

Something of the quality of the frames here recalls sidewalk chalk or cave paintings.
