Just the right amount of ridiculous to be funny and not stupid. Hanks is really finding his feet here (or not, those stairs!) as a comedic actor which he'd perfect in the coming years. Perhaps the most satisfying aspect of his performance is the physical humour.

Never delivers on its promising beginning. Shelly Long and Tom Hanks alone were not enough to keep things interesting. It would have helped to have a 3rd person at the house to mix things up; maybe the fat friend. Long was kind of a dependent side character to Hanks so she didn't get to do much on her own except to create conflict for him. Fav scene: the sequence of Hanks going through various means of destroying the scaffolding to opera music.

Probably the funniest of Tom Hanks' 1980s comedies. The bit where he slowly sinks into the ground as the carpet beneath him slides through the hole in the floor? Gold.

The fact that it's not a girl-meets-boy story made it more interesting to me than most of all the other romantic comedies out there, but there's still very little substance in it. If, like me, you're happy just to spend some time in Tom Hanks and Shelley Long's company then it's ok fun.

It's an impressively competent modern screwball comedy. Shelley Long and Tom Hanks have great chemistry, and its ending is such a quintessential screwball comedy ending that it wouldn't seem out of place if you replaced them with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn.

Hanks and Long are likable enough, but the whole thing is too directionless, and the laughs are almost non existent. They could have done more with the builders as that was the only part even remotely close to being funny. A comedy about a desperate couple fixing up a seemingly nice house that's actually riddled with problems is a good premise, but outside of the two leads it just wasn't executed very well. Plus it had hardly any 80's charm to fall back on.

A can’t-miss farcical slapstick premise, a support cast studded with top-rate comic actors, and ready-to-play headliners Hanks and Long are defeated by Benjamin’s sloppy and inconsistent direction, though bizarrely the bits that do work are pulled off spectacularly well (especially the collapsing staircase and scaffolding). A shaggy-dog subplot with Godunov completely kills the momentum just when the film should be firing up for a big-scale finish. Just worth it for the parts that work.

Another one of the bizarre comedies Hanks made in the 1980's. Forgettable if you are able to actually forget how annoying Shelly Long is.

Having bought and renovated a house recently, so much of this was painfully but amusingly recognisable! Quite a silly but enjoyable farce for the most part, but then the 'cheating' sub plot comes out of nowhere and changes the tone of the film completely. That latter section didn't work well for me and had a really rushed/forced arc resolution, but isn't enough to completely ruin the overall comedic value of the movie.

Hanks and Long are very likable, but this yuppie update of _Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House_ loses all contact with reality (and humor). Starts out funny but just gets worse and worse.

This is a relatively entertaining film with an emphasis on physical comedy. There are quite a few chuckles from the remarkable screen presence of Tom Hanks. The scaffolding scene is particularly memorable. Unfortunately my score is dragged way down by the ending, which was a huge disappointment. The writing was so good for the first two thirds of the film, and then it falls off a cliff.

Box Obras-primas do Cinema Sessão Anos 80.

One of those movies you forget you ever watched 20 minutes after finishing it. It is comparable to a lot of the work Tom Hanks was doing at the time. There's an odd feel to the movie that comes from a mixture of weak writing, weak acting, outlandish happenings, and bad eighties music.

The Money Pit has good intentions, but it's really too paper thin of a plot to rise above its source material. Tom Hanks and Shelley Long throw themselves into their characters and their manic energy keeps a lot of the scenes afloat. There are some funny slapstick moments, but the film feels like a weird melodrama forced into a Three Stooges film and it mostly is too disjointed to work.

Hanks before the Oscars, fame, wealth and eventual ego took large chunks of talent away. Not a great film per se, just nice to see him before he became an act-tor. See also Big for a superior example of this.
