A horror film with a plot everyone's a suspect Actor's I've actually heard of most notably Curtis and Neilsen A fair amount of gore and a killer with a justifiable reason to kill Anyway if you're into 80's horror worth a watch

This early entry into the 80's slasher wave is part "Halloween"(1978) with the Jamie Lee Curtis "scream queen" lead, part "Carrie"(1976) with its 70's prom setting, part "Black Christmas"(1974) with its red herring subplots, and part "Friday the 13th"(1980) with its awkward revenge "mystery" killer; all mashed into a canuxploitation slasher. Plus some fun side characters like the queen-bitch Wendy, the bully Lou, or with his killer van moves, the coolest "fat dorky guy" character ever, "Slick".

I'm never one to scoff at the presence of Leslie Nielsen, but if you don't have some history with this movie, I doubt you're going to love it. Those that praise the mystery element ignore the fact that the mystery killer doesn't show up until fifty minutes into the movie! Then when he finally does, he's straight up Canadian.

A scant two years after the unprecedented success of "Halloween" came the beginning of the rush of knock-offs, this one even features fledgling scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis herself. Don't confuse this for a good slasher though, it was a far cry from the likes of "Halloween", which itself is highly overrated. Leave it to the Canadians to take the fun out of mass murder.

Nothing noteworthy at all. Really not much different than a random MST or BOTW b-movie, boom mics and all, but less entertaining because it isn't anywhere near as funny. There's a shot straight out of Pieces with a suspect goofily posing with a chainsaw

No "Halloween", but this really improved after watching on blu-ray. First of all, the photography is so murky that you need to see it from film/HD; otherwise you can't fully see what's going on. Takes it's time with the killings, but when it shifts gears, it contains some of the most innovative & suspenseful scenes in slasher genre. Disco factor added certain charm to me, but It's easy to see how it might piss off others. JLC, lots of red herrings, and a script that holds water better than most.

It's strange to watch this early slasher for the first time in 2016 because it means that there are no surprises whatsoever in this movie. There is some entertainment and this is probably worth watching again, but there is very little horror or mystery. Extra points for the disco dancing scenes.

Passable, low-key slasher never develops much tension, with the identity of the ultimate perpetrator disappointingly arbitrary (the inexplicable disappearance of a key likely suspect from the final third of the film was a frustrating red herring). Echoes of HALLOWEEN with Curtis giving a fairly bored performance, ditto Nielsen who after an emotional opening scene spends the rest of the film reading from cue cards! The mystery of why Curtis' brother and boyfriend look so similar goes unresolved.

Typical 80's slasher. The kills are almost unbearably lame and there are a lot of unintentional giggles. I liked the soundtrack though and the final struggle is cool if only for the way the music complements the action. If you really need a horror film that takes place on prom night, then you need to see CARRIE.

Good opening. Good final act. For the hour in between, beyond Curtis going Nancy Drew in a bra for a scene, nothing much to recommend.

Takes way too long to get where it’s going without building any sort of atmosphere. You never feel unnerved, weirded out or that it really deserves the payoff it gets. Once it gets to the titular prom night it actually becomes a decent slasher. With colourful discoesque lighting it makes all the colours pop. Love how you can faintly hear the music at all times in the various attack sequences. Your classmates are dancing to disco in the gym while you’re being murdered nostalgic asmr type beat.

Entertaining and overtley creepy slasher flick. Nothing really incredibly special, but it does have lots of naked chicks and some creative deaths, so yeah. Jamie Lee Curtis is still the scream queen.

While this isn't a great film but it is pretty solid. I did enjoy the fact that the killer wasn't perfect and that the victims seem to honestly have a fighting chance. I also ended up guessing the wrong killer so that was also a plus.

I'd forgotten how much misdirection they try to insert in this movie. I don't think it works very well given the framing device but since the slasher parts come really only during the last 20 minutes of the movie it pads things out pretty well. After the introduction that establishes the motive of the killer the next 45 minutes or so builds up to the night of the prom with some ominous bits here and there. It plays out a lot more like a thriller with some killing at the end than a slasher.

I hear they're remaking this, which might be a good play. Prom Night is an entertaining diversion from traditional slashers with some sort of supernatural killer, making it all the more realistic and gritty. It's definitely something you should toss in the old VCR/DVD Player if you like having the gang over for classic modern horror.

"Prom Night" (only sparking my interest due to the recent remake) doesn't do much else that any other poorly acted 80s slasher film did. It's not particularly scary or interesting, or even skillful in its slayings. The killer of the film is actually very uninteresting and much of the chases of his/her victims run on way too long and it left an annoying loose plot point on the back-burner. You won't find anything above standard here, and by today's expectations, it's just about awful.

Flat out boring. It's not interesting and it's not an achievement by any stretch of the imagination. Instead of being scared I was busy checking my watch at how dull the film was. The voice over dialog is unbelievably clumsy and really detracts from an already bad film. Give it a miss, there's nothing here except bad generic 80's slasher.

The least I expect from this is some random teenagers being killed off in enjoyable fashion in at least slightly suspenseful scenes during prom night. But this movie can't even do that right! The killings are dreadfully unsuspenseful, and the last 20 minutes in which they happen, are even the best part of this movie! So best not to say much on the rest, which starts with a prologue featuring thoroughly annoying children and from their just crawls on with more red herrings than murder victims.

A bit derivative, which is kind of a surprise for the early date. Starts of a bit slow but disco prom is awesome. Hardly the greatest slasher ever but I'd definitely say it's above average.

It's interesting to see a film like this avoid the obvious of route of titillation and gore in favour of a more dramatic narrative, but the fact that it is still restricted to a conventional slasher film structure, that only works with those exploitative tropes, undermines its chances and reduces the drama to uninteresting and dull writing.

A mediocre slasher, I mostly just found it dull. I can get what they were going for, with the slow burn and not very good killer. But it just doesn't quite give me enough to care about in all that time it spends before the action and even that bit isn't very good. Everything involving the actual disco prom was great, but not enough to carry the rest of the movie for me

JLC is at her best in this derivative and dumb but quite presentable slasher. Girls scream, a head rolls on the dance floor, and Jamie struts her stuff in a hilariously out-of-place "Saturday Night Fever" disco sequence -- though she later proves her acting mettle in her final confrontation with the killer. Followed by three kind-of sequels.

The whodunnit aspect was fun, but other than that there's not much to it. At least half the actors are abysmal, especially the kids at the beginning. The lines are all pretty corny, but it's a scary movie so that is to be expected. Movie was also slow moving, especially the unusually long scenes of prom dancing (I guess it was obligatory due to the title?). Overall, good enough for a halloween movie to watch drunk with friends, but not recommended otherwise.

Though it does have a great performance by Curtis in the lead & has a few enjoyable moments here & there, that's not enough to save it from being the dated, bland & agonizingly slow-paced effort that it is. The story is fine on paper, but the execution is more than a little off the mark, from the very odd opening scene to the final twist. All the pieces are there, but there's just something missing- it could have been great, but unfortunately it's pretty dull.

Is it sad that the horror movie about prom is only half as scary as my actual high school prom? It's a poorly written mess of unrealized plot threads that doesn't even bother to attempt to scare it's audience until it's final 30 minutes. Even then, it fails to elicit any kind of fear. Skip it and watch the similar and far superior "My Bloody Valentine" instead.

Really disappointed by this movie. While I watched all I could think was that some studio executive said "I like Halloween and I like Carrie - and they both made money. Make me something like that." It's a competent movie, it just had no real spirit to it. I didn't find the kills or the killer to be very creative - just very by-the-book slasher. I know its normal for older people to play the "teenagers" but in this one the students and teachers were so close in age I kept getting them confused.

Meh. It's technically sound, polished, and has a nice surprise twist. The camera work and lighting are particularly impressive and there's a decent set-piece thrown in for good measure. On the other hand, this story has been done to death and the killings weren't very creative. Mediocre at best.

The only reason this film occupies a bigger place in the public consciousness than, say, "Final Exam" or "Graduation Day" is the presence of Jamie Lee Curtis. This is a stinker. The identity of the killer is painfully obvious as soon as the opening sequence ends. The effort put into propping up an unseen escaped mental patient as a red herring is completely wasted. Nothing really happens in the first hour of this film. When stuff finally does happen, it's pretty perfunctory.

Good attempt foiled by pure incompetence; this is one 80s slasher where the special FX don't look that bad... because it's so poorly lit you can't even SEE the special FX, and that's assuming you even stay awake through the poor pacing.
