The Dark Horse

You've seen the same basic story in several films before, but the New Zealand setting, at least, makes it different enough. It's a heartwarming tale, and I didn't even realise how much so until the end, where I found myself swept up in the emotions. It's also the best glimpse into this aspect of Maori culture since Once Were Warriors. All the performances are good, but special mention has to go to Cliff Curtis, who really inhabits the role. I definitely recommend it.

Not nearly as complex as was advertised, and the mix of Maui and English was unintelligible at times, still a compelling story.

An incredible movie. Well-acted, intense, emotional, funny, and rewarding movie with positive themes.

very predictable but effectively melodramatic evocation of both mental illness and poor, gang-ridden maori suburbs. certainly it isn't as bad as the description makes out. though one thing that i'm sick of in true-story films is the text they throw on at the end, to conclude everything. rarely does it actually add something.

Solid drama about breaking away from a troubled life. It stands out because it portrays a different side of New Zealand life and its main protagonist suffers from mental illness.

Certainly cheesy at times, but quite well done, and featuring a couple of good performances - notably Cliff Curtis in the lead role and Wayne Hapi as his brother.
