Hard to stifle a laugh when everyone acts like an over-caffeinated mime artist -- not that I cared about any of the circumstances those idiots got themselves into. The film also unfolds with a kind of unnatural immediacy that hampers both character development and narrative tension. Pseudo art-house bullshit.

The big question: Would it be any good with normal dialogue? Not particularly.

An essential concept, executed with momentum and only occasional art-film downtime. But the story reveals itself to be trash - not about themes, character or a believable society, but rather nihilistic sensationalism, Eastern Europe style. Film festival clichés abound.

Technically speaking a good film - its lack of takes attests to that - but it's an icy cold movie that's incredibly dull save for a few moments of excitement.

Not nearly enough narrative or characterization to warrant its 2+ hour running time, 'The Tribe' exists as an object of interest only for its sole claim to fame: all dialogue expressed through sign language. But were one to offer the valid question, "Well, would this be an interesting film with dialogue?", I believe the answer to be a resounding, "No." Moments of visceral brutality are engaging, but never feel warranted with its imperceptible story. One of the bigger disappointments of 2015.

For those of us who don't understand sign language, this movie is a complete mess. Really bad choice to release it without subtitles. I mean in other circumstances it could be pulled off, but it really wasn't.

The silence is awesome and I enjoy the idea of a film shot entirely in sign language. There are some raw scenes and I like how it's filmed and how it looks... but the story is only decent, and -- like Ofterdingen -- I doubt it would have been as interesting has it been more normal. I question why there aren't subtitles as it doesn't seem to have the intended effect... just muddles things needlessly.

15. !f - Budak: Hikayesi anlamında müthiş bir film değil. Ama içerdiği grafik şiddetten ziyade, sinemayı kullanım biçimi itibariyle gördüğüm en sert filmlerden biri.

An audacious stunt and a technical marvel in pursuit of shallow nihilism and adolescent power fantasies, which is a bit of a shame. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this enormous, complex pantomime play itself out, but couldn’t help but roll my eyes at most of the major plot turns. Not even George Clooney could pull off the “man fucks prostitute so good she falls in love with him” trope. This troglodyte has no chance

Remarkable that the entirety of this film was conveyed without the use of spoken language or subtitles. A masterpiece of "show, don't tell", it puts us in the shoes of the new boy and forces us to adapt to new, constantly changing situations. The various characters come across as realistic human beings, not just mafia caricatures. Despite the attempted escape, there is an air of hopelessness which, coupled with the violence, echoes a number of modern Russian films, especially Zvyagintsev's.

Not as gimmicky as I imagined but just another -slightly hipster-looking- juvenile delinquent film.

The silence is deafening in this movie, and that's not just a great play on words. The absence of spoken dialogue elevates the physical interaction to a level rarely seen on screen. Definitely one of a kind. Wait for the end.

Man stelle sich vor, irgendwo auf der Welt befände sich eine Spezies, die vollkommen unerkannt exisitiert. Was würdest du als Filmemacher damit anfangen? Nicht mehr als eine Art Remake von Kids? Irgendwann, als mir bewusst wurde, dass The Tribe nichts anderes ist als ein östliches Remake von Kids ohne Worte... mehr auf cinegeek.de

Unique, without single word spoken or music played. By using above artistic means we feel like main characters in day-to-day world - alienated. Brutal.

Though full of sign-language shouting, being that it purposefully lacks subtitles, to most viewers this is practically a wordless (but importantly, not silent) film. I couldn't suss many details out, but it's easy to catch the general drift, and its persuasiveness and strength are undeniable. The pretty and very wide photography maintains a measured detachment even during the most visceral scenes, and the sound design is just as central.

A film in Afrikaans isn't supposed to be watched w/o subtitles, so why is this one? One of the most painful experiences I've ever had watching a movie, no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Absolutely insufferable.

Good idea - there's a metaphor there if you want to see it, powerlessness as speaking a different language that others don't even acknowledge. Sadly, it ends up dragging way too much.
