The movie, Erin Brockovich, captures the true story of a twice-divorced, single mom, Erin (Julia Roberts), who discovers an injustice and fights for the people who need to win the most. She takes on a large corporation, PG&E, who she is convinced has actively poisoned a town. Erin devotes herself to stop this criminal act in ways less conventional than expected. (Universal Pictures)

Erin Brockovich forgoes legal cliches of big courtroom speeches, but replacing it with discussions of arbitration isn't particularly compelling. Oddly enough, the film works best as a comedy, and Albert Finney kills it. It's not particularly objectionable, other than the fact that we're supposed to believe Julia Roberts's tits aren't taped together like a broken Lego set.

Interesting, well-directed, strong performance by Roberts...but it feels like it has no replay value. Of course maybe that's because I saw it a billion times on TV, but it feels so dry at times - very procedural without any dramatic punch, even as well made as it is. I dunno.

If it weren't for the completely out of the blue feelgood-tone in its resolution (from what i know, cancer doesn't go away if you dump enough cash on it, that's aids!), I would've liked it a lot more. Roberts delivers, though it's hardly oscar-worthy. In fact the role doesn't even hold that potential to me...but whatever. Way to go hollywood, you show those big corporate thugs how it's the little people that'll always come out on top.

It's definitely your by-the-numbers "everyday Joe takes on big bad company" story, but Soderbergh's direction strips away the Hollywood sheen to make it feel homegrown.

Well, uh, not to break away from the consensus on this site, which seems to be mostly composed of bored straight men who can only remember Roberts' breasts, but I think this speaks highly of Soderbergh's heyday. In fact, I might've preferred he won the Oscar for this over Traffic. His approach is deceptively procedural here but he's working tons of magic to keep the plot compelling, the characters realistic without overwhelming, and adding neat touches to a well-wrought screenplay.

I wasn't expecting to like this very much, but it was very good. I was afraid that they'd present Erin as the perfect working class hero uber-woman, but Soderbergh did an admirable job of showing her flaws. Or maybe he sees those flaws as virtues, I dunno. Either way, powerful story with interesting characters.

It's not too bad for what it is. However, I always find that Roberts seems kind of, I don't know, artificial in her roles. There's something about her I can't put my finger on, but I never can buy her characters as people.

Dismissed as a Julia Roberts vehicle, this one is more than chick-flick rah-rah material. Infinitely better than fare such as "North Country", this one earns points for its intelligent screenplay, frank characterizations and Roberts's fiery, Oscar-winning performance.

What sets ERIN BROCKOVICH apart is the attention to detail, the very witty script, and brilliant casting by Soderbergh. Every performance smacks of reality, even down to those of the children, who are so authentic you'd almost think they weren't acting at all.

One of Soderbergh's mainstream Hollywood projects. This one can't escape its origins; there's something trite and hacky about the whole thing and when you factor in stuff like Aaron Eckhart's ridiculously lame sweet-hearted biker character, you're not doing the movie any favors. That being said, I do kinda like Julia Roberts in it, which is a new thing for me. Maybe, as Erin Brockovich says in the picture, it's just because of her boobs.

I read somewhere that this was a "investigative procedural with a comedic protagonist," and I think that's a very good description. With the entire premise reliant on Roberts' performance, it's a good thing she pulls it off; with just the right balance of comic and serious to create a memorably feisty heroine. Considering the rest of the director's oeuvre, this is a remarkably safe, conventional film, that satisfyingly passes the time, while achieving nothing remarkable.

The story arc in this is just fantastic, starting with Erin's lowest point and ending with her triumph. It is also cut extremely well, moving along quickly from scene to scene. The characterization of the company as the big, evil establishment is sort of formulaic, as is the "pissed off woman with an attitude", but they both work rather well here.

A meaningful film that tells a true story. Just not very captivating. I wouldn't recommend it, tad too boring for me, even though I do like the parts where it correctly captures what happened in reality and I personally think what happened matters a lot but I can't say the film is as entertaining as it is meaningful. Watch it if you want to learn more about how corrupt man can be in our world, to expand your knowledge, otherwise watch something that gives you more of a good time.

Enjoyable, but maybe too long. Julia Robert and Albert Finney have great chemistry though and make the relationship between their characters believable. The film, as many of Soderbergh's do, give you a story to follow with a strong undercurrent of economic politics - which unfortunately here gets swept aside in the last act while the character of Brockovich is given a lot of big moments - and up until that point it was doing so well to not be an "inspirational" biopic.

Yes, yes, the final result is a good thing, but the movie makes it very clear that it's all about HER suffering and HER sacrifice and HER blah blah blah, as opposed to all those unattractive people who were only poisoned and who nobody remembers anyway. Also, in the world of this movie, it's, somehow, okay for her to publically ridicule some female lawyer who may have worked like hell to get where she is because said lawyer is wearing "ugly shoes". The "heroine" here is, I must say, a real bitch

Julia Roberts is too much Julia Roberts and the whole story just doesn't ever really seem to build up to anything. It does feature Harvey Dent in his searching years and Albert fucking Finney, but like 'A Civil Action' the subject matter is perhaps to large and complex to ever fully be effective on film. This push-up bra is fooling no one.

Roberts and Finney do a great job in a movie that was much better than I expected it to be. Despite it being predictable and formulaic the 2+ hours still goes by fairly quickly. The only time I felt the run time were during a few repetitive moments. The small romance side plot between Roberts and Eckhart was treated well too. It neither felt tacked on or groan worthy and was fair to Eckhart's character despite him not being the hero of the film.

A commercial for the warped American justice system, in which overpaid champions duke it out while justice waits outside. Obviously the key to gender equality is for women to always strive to dress as provocatively as possible, and if you think otherwise you must be either a prude or fat and incompetent. From the writing and direction you'd think this was a Beethoven movie spin-off.
