It's a tough film, dealing with faith, hardship, and the modern American landscape, but what it is ultimately about, I don't know. Despite all the editorializing going on, we're shortchanged on important resolutions. Looks like Jesse Moss didn't know what came at him.

The ending for the pastor was a bit predictable (the foreshadowing was clear in two earlier scenes). The documentary was okay. As far as my personal feelings, I think he put a community at risk with his actions, and his family too. The sex offender he let stay at his house was arrested for raping women after the events in the film, and is now in prison.

Starts as an interesting documentary, but then becomes a mess, with the main guy playing to the camera and possibly the worst ending to a documentary, ever.

I did feel kinda lost towards the end. Very interesting subject matter but the ending came so suddenly and out of nowhere.. I think it was just too much after a certain point that the documentary actually loses focus, probably even the moviemakers are not exactly sure what the documentary is really about, the pastor or the overnighters..

14. !f - Budak: Teknik başarısından ziyade, işlediği konu nedeniyle kayda değer bir belgesel. Ama bir belgeselin sonuna, sürpriz final saklanmasını pek etik bulmadığımı da söyleyeyim.

The odd spiral that ends the film tends to pull the viewer away from story of the overnighters. Tough to tell one who the film is actually about.

It's scattershot and overproduced, but I really like this one despite itself. The subplots, at first tangential, eventually come to comment upon the main plot in pretty fruitful ways, complementing Pastor Reinke's own trajectory as a flawed, "broken" man trying to do his best and coming up tragically short. It's about the morality of meritocracy and the Christian ethic of loving thy neighbor, and the gulf between how we value these ideals in theory and in practice.

It's almost unfair to grade THE OVERNIGHTERS as a complete film as it takes a sudden and massive eleventh-hour twist that raises a entire different set of questions, issues, and themes. But it is an effective snapshot of good intentions that seem destined to go awry against the quintessential backdrop of forever-recession America.

The themes resonated, the focus and downward spiral lost me a bit. It was strong, but could have been more.
