93 96% Titus Titus (1999) - Rated 10 Mar 2007
"Shakespeare's most bloody and violent play has been masterfully adapted into an imaginary facist-world and it works perfectly. Everyone in the film is fantastic, especially Hopkins and Jessica Lange. The sets, costumes and art direction are nothing short of brilliant. One or two of the dreamish sequences don't sit quite right but aside from that it's masterful."
86 86% Ginger Snaps: Unleashed Ginger Snaps: Unleashed (2004) - Rated 09 May 2010
"Better than the first in my opinion and it honestly features the most gruesome and inventive death in any horror movie I have ever seen. The style, editing and soundtrack blend together perfectly to set the mood for the film, while it still retains the dark humor of the first. This is one of the best horror movies ever made."
81 74% Ginger Snaps Ginger Snaps (2000) - Rated 09 May 2010
"Not a horror fan but this one manages to outdo its own genre. Instead of a mediocre werewolf flick Ginger Snaps is a darkly comedic horror flick about social outcasts finally growing up. It's blurring of Ginger's puberty and transformation into a creature of the full moon results in unexpected, but welcome, black humour. Kudos on the script which really makes this worth watch despite some spotty acting here and there. Also Mimi Rogers makes a great over-bearing but loving mother."
92 95% Drive Drive (2011) - Rated 18 Sep 2011
"Drive is a brilliant film. It's artsy enough to excite the film connoisseur but still enjoyable by a more common movie goer. The supremely 80's vibe oozes style. The majority of the film is slow and methodical but when the action heats up it's tremendously intense and brief. Refn, who's not one to shy away from violence, doesn't do so here either. You see every horrible death in full brutal detail. The entire cast is superb, especially Gosling as the protagonist."
92 95% True Grit True Grit (2010) - Rated 27 Dec 2010
"Though this has certainly been advertised as a dramatic film I'd be lying if I said I wasn't howling with laughter at multiple points during the film. That is a testament to the mastery of the Coen brothers who are able to make a film that is deadly dark and serious while still being tremendously funny. I've never seen the original but I can say with assurance that the entire cast is brilliant. Hailee Steinfield has a tremendous career ahead of her."
91 93% Black Dynamite Black Dynamite (2009) - Rated 27 May 2010
"Black Dynamite is, without a doubt, spoof of genius quality. In a time where we're swamped with films like Epic Movie and the like this is tremendously refreshing. While it pokes fun at the blaxsploitation genre it also pays homage to it as well instead of just lampooning it. Michael Jai White is an accomplished martial artist so the action scenes are incredibly impressive, and humourous, at the same time. This is hands down one of the best spoofs ever made and is a must see."
95 98% The Social Network The Social Network (2010) - Rated 05 Oct 2010
"You might get wrapped up in the fact that Sorkin writes more for story-telling than 100% factual accuracy but if you do then you'll miss out on a superb film. More than anything The Social Network captures how ill-equipped every involved was the the explosion of Facebook. The entire cast is superb, the soundtrack is terrifyingly good and Fincher masterfully directs a film about nerds suing one another into a emotionally gripping and tension filled movie. Incredible."
91 93% Pale Rider Pale Rider (1985) - Rated 25 Apr 2010
"Though a lot of people consider the Man with No Name trilogy the highlight of Eastwood's western career, and with good reason considering they're excellent films, for me I'd have to go with Unforgiven, High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider. Like High Plains Drifter this involves slightly surreal and almost supernatural forces working through the Eastwood's "preacher" character which gives an interesting twist on the genre. If you want Eastwood this won't disappoint."
88 89% The American The American (2010) - Rated 17 Oct 2010
"The American is a superb slow-moving suspense film. Instead of being jam-packed with action the majority of the film remains smart and cerebral. When the action picks up it is intense but conservative to maintain realism. Clearly it takes a page from the classic Le Samourai. Clooney is superb in this and Violante Placido, an unknown to me, does an amazing job acting against such a high calibre actor. With that said the extended montage moments could be lessened but aside from that, it's great."
84 81% Mystery Team Mystery Team (2009) - Rated 27 May 2010
"I went into this film completely blind, as I had never heard of Derrick Comedy, and I can assure you I was very impressed. Not every single joke is dynamite hilarity and some do fall flat. However a lot of them are downright hilarious. If the thought of The Hardy Boys investigating gritty crimes like on CSI appeals to you then this will certainly entertain. Sure some of the acting is spotty in places but this is still well worth seeing."
