HD Trailer for I Love You, Man

Alright, it’s got one of those “geez, what a concept” plots concerning an imminent wedding and the wacky hijinks that lead up to it. But unlike say, Made of Honor, I Love You, Man actually looks like it might be hilarious. After watching the trailer, we could count at least 5 things this movie has going for it.

1) Paul Rudd - Who we’d love in anything. He’s just lovable.
2) Jason Segel - Who is hilarious before he even opens his mouth, and won our eternal appreciation by playing Nick, our favorite character in Freaks & Geeks.
3) Rashida Jones - Who actually is hotter than Pam. Not that we don’t love Pam. But for sheer hotness, Kevin was right.
4) JK Simmons - Another actor who can be funny without saying anything. Man, this film might not even need dialogue, with Simmons & Segel’s wordless hilarity, and Jones & Rudd’s hotness.
5) At least three uproarious moments … I laughed more at this trailer than during the entirety of Made of Honor.

Check it out yourself:

We can’t wait for this one! Although, the first time I ever heard the term “Man Date” out of one of my (straight) friend’s mouths, I almost shat myself. The fact that hanging out with your buddy means you’re involved in a “Bromance” and you go on “Man Dates”… I don’t know, it’s just wrong.

Criticker’s Top 10 Films of 2008

2008 has faded into the past, and it was certainly an interesting year. The financial crisis and the US election were just two of the overwhelming news events which often sent us scurrying to the cinema for some good old escapism. But which were the films that the users of Criticker liked more than any other?

Here you are… the Top Ten Films of 2008, as determined by average tier.

1) The Dark Knight - Avg Tier 8.66

Let’s rewind 11 years. It’s 1997, and you just left the theater in disgust after having wasted your hard-earned cash on Batman and Robin. If someone had told you that, in the near future, a Batman film would be the year’s best… what would you have said? Well, it’s come to pass, and the fact that a comic book flick is the year’s most loved is almost exhilarating as Heath Ledger’s unforgettable performance as the Joker.

2) The Wrestler - Avg Tier 8.48

Continuing in the vein of “I can’t believe this was so good” is Darren Aronofsky’s film about a washed up wrestler. Starring Mickey Rourke. Yup, a wrestling movie starring Mickey Rourke is the year’s second best … losing out only slightly to a comic book adaptation. Awesome.

3) WALL·E - Avg Tier 8.37

Ahh… coming in at number 3 is a film that we had reason to expect great things from, and WALL·E didn’t disappoint. Visually stunning, WALL·E would’ve been amazing even if it didn’t have a wonderful, unique plot. But it did, and Pixar’s latest is perhaps their best yet — which is saying something.

4) Let the Right One In - Avg Tier 8.10

If you were in the mood for young vampires, you’d have been well-advised to skip Twilight, and instead hunt down Let the Right One In — a quietly arresting movie out of Sweden. Alternately romantic and violent, this film made a fan out of every Criticker user who saw it.

5) Milk - Avg Tier 8.09

Sean Penn is one of the favorites to win the Best Actor Oscar this year, for his triumphant and joyous portrait of San Francisco’s gay-rights icon, Harvey Milk. Yes, this is a “message” film, but it’s one that works on every level.

6) Slumdog Millionaire - Avg Tier 8.04

Bollywood meets the West, in Danny Boyle’s exuberant Slumdog Millionaire — a fairytale-like story of one boy’s attempts to help his friend by appearing on the Hindi “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”. You know, let’s file this one under “I can’t believe it was so good”, too. This film has been racking up a lot of critics’ awards, and might be a dark horse, come Oscar time.

7) Man on Wire - Avg Tier 7.98

2008 was certainly at no loss for unique cinematic experiences, as #7 and #8 on our year-end list prove. Both are documentaries; one about a tightrope walker’s illegal 1974 stunt, and the other about life in Antarctica. Both are among 2008’s must-see films.

9) Synecdoche, New York - Avg Tier 7.43

Despite big-name stars and perhaps the biggest-name screenwriter currently working, not too many people saw Charlie Kaufmann’s directorial debut Synecdoche, New York. Maybe that’s because no one knew how to pronounce it, and so couldn’t recommend it to their friends. Who knows? Anyway, nearly all Criticker users who did see it, loved it.

10) Rachel Getting Married - Avg Tier 7.41

Anne Hathaway can act! It’s something we always suspected, but she finally got a chance to really prove it, in Jonathan Demme’s awkwardly engaging drama.

Kudos must go to a few other films which scored high, but which we left off this list. Pixar’s animated short Presto scored almost as well as WALL·E, and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog debuted online, and was also greatly loved.

Did your favorite film make the cut? I was saddened that one of my favorite films of 2008, In Bruges, didn’t land in the top ten. What about you?

Collection Watch - So Bad They’re Good

On Christmas Eve, we introduced the new Criticker Collections functionality. Smart move… we then spent much of the holidays cleaning up the bugs and problems which users were finding at an alarming pace.

But now that things are working pretty smoothly, it’s time to start highlighting some of the public collections our users have been creating. Public collections are those which anyone can add to, and are moderated by their creator. We’ll start with a fun collection created by Rufflesack — films that are So Bad They’re Good. Rufflesack describes these as “Films that are either unintentionally hilarious, awesome because of their B-movie factor or in any other way lovable despite their lack of quality.

Troll 2: You know you wanna watch it

One of the best things about Collections is that you can generate PSIs (Probable Score Indicators) and sort by them. And if you think of another terrible-but-hilarious film that’s not yet included, you can add it directly from the collection’s page. But Rufflesack’s got a pretty good start going in this collection, including Manos: The Hands of Fate, and Delta Force 2.

Introducing Criticker Collections

christmas-in-Valencia

We’ve been working hard the past few months, and are happy to finally announce the release of the long-awaited Collections functionality at Criticker!

The concept of Criticker Collections is pretty straight-forward: they allow you to gather groups of films together. But there are some things about them which deserve highlighting.

3 Collection Types

You can choose to create collections that are public, private or hidden.

Public: Any user may add films to your collection. You retain the ability to moderate the collection, and ban specific users from it.
Private: Other users may view this collection, but not add to it.
Hidden: Collections which are for your eyes only.

You can change the type of your collections whenever you see fit.

Public Collection Notifications

You will receive a daily update of all the films other users have added to your public collections. You can opt out of this update, if you’d like.

Conversion from Tags

We started work on Collections immediately after releasing the recent Tag functionality at Criticker, because that revealed the huge demand for the ability to group films together. Most of the current tags will be converted to Public Collections, owned by whoever originally created the tag. This process has already started, and should be done within a week or so. If you’ve created tags that have been converted, you’ll receive an email. Likewise if you’ve created a tag that you’d like to have converted, please email us and let us know.

Full Filtering and Browsing

All the filtering and browsing options available from our Film List are available at the collections level, too. You can also see a list of any user’s collections, if you go to their list of rankings.

Restriction of Tag Definition

As we convert tags into collections, we’re also restricting what the term “tag” means at Criticker, to one of three things: Central Theme, Setting or Subgenre. More information can be found here.

New Forum

We’ve introduced a new forum, to concentrate on Collections. Users will likely need a place to trumpet the awesome, bizarre, or thoughtful collections they’ve made, and this will be where they can do it.

Work in Progress!

If we didn’t despise the overuse of the term “Beta” so much, we’d call this release: Criticker Collections Beta. That is to say, despite the hours of testing we’ve logged, we expect a few problems to be uncovered in the first few days. Please let us know about any you find via email, or the Forums. Likewise, suggestions or comments are always welcome.

That’s it for now! We hope you all like the new changes, and thank you again for using Criticker! Now, let’s start building some collections!

2008’s Best Picture from Vegas, San Fran, London & More

We’re revving up into awards season, and a number of regional critics associations have begun handing out their awards for 2008. Their picks are usually strong indicators for Oscar time… so let’s take a look at the films doing well in some of the already-announced awards.

Wall-E

Winner: Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston (tie)
Slumdog Millionaire

Winner: London, Washington D.C., Boston (tie)

Among the group of cities we looked at, Wall-E and Slumdog Millionaire have the most honors. But is Oscar willing to bestow its award for Best Picture on either an animated flick, or a foreign one? It’s not typical, but perhaps this could be the year…

Milk

Winner: San Francisco, New York City
Frost/Nixon

Winner: Las Vegas

Likewise, Milk and Frost/Nixon have been garnering wonderful reviews but the chances of either winning Best Picture have to be slim at best. Hollywood may be a festering cesspool of immoral liberalism, but the awards-givers usually don’t like to publicly celebrate that fact… (Crash over Brokeback, anyone?)

So if it’s none of these, which film do you think stands the best shot at winning?
