The DNA of Movies

Guess what movie this is:

vertigo

It’s every second of Vertigo. Interesting how the director’s style comes through in this format, almost as much as on film.

This explores the idea of distilling a whole film down to one single image. Using eight of my favourite films from eight of my most admired directors including Sidney Lumet, Francis Ford Coppola and John Boorman, each film is processed through a Java program written with the processing environment. This small piece of software samples a movie every second and generates an 8 x 6 pixel image of the frame at that moment in time. It does this for the entire film, with each row representing one minute of film time.

The Simpsons: The Ball of Death

Before you get distracted by the game, I would like to draw your attention to a fascinating interactive map of Springfield:

interaktive-Simpsons-Karte

Discover Springfield, where live the Simpsons family; Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa and Maggie. Roll over the places to discover a picture of it. The map of Springfield is based on the Guide to Springfield USA. I made this interactive, the job is not finished, there are allways framegrabs to add and add some functions to the map.

They would look nice in our Criticker office.

These high-quality 20×20 cm prints might be small but they’re guaranteed to create maximum impact in any scenario. Each eye-catching pop arty-style image is printed on premium canvas stretched over a sturdy wooden frame.

Netflix vs Blockbuster

netflix-vs-Blockbuster

Competition is the best thing which can happen to customers. Within 3 weeks Netflix lowered their "three DVDs out at-a-time" plan from $17.99 to $15.99. Will Blockbuster follow?

How low can these prices go before the by-mail movie rental services are completely unprofitable? Will this be a situation like a gunfight where both participants shoot each other and die?

Here in Ireland, our "2 DVDs out at a time" plan costs us $25 a month. We’re jealous.

The Mouse and His Child

Thank you Pilgermann for sending us another full length feature: The Mouse and His Child After you’ve watched the film, make sure to head over to its film info page to rank it.

Pilgermann’s Mini Review: This is a decent adaptation of Russel Hoban’s brilliant novel. The violence is toned down a bit, but they left in most of the existential shit about infinity and whatnot (the Bonzo Dog Food label sequence is pretty cool). Unfortunately the animation isn’t the highest quality, but it’s not terrible. Overall it’s a pretty good film and fine for a person of any age.
