We all heard rumors - but it’s official now. iTunes has just enabled movie rentals.
Standard-definition movie rentals on the iTunes Store are $3.99 for new releases and $2.99 for library titles. Rent a movie and you have 30 days to start watching. Hit Play, and you have 24 hours to finish it - or play it as many times as you want. Rentals disappear when they expire, so they won’t take up storage space on your hard drive.

I wonder how long it will be before they crack it.
It’s a dumbass idea. Why not sell the movies for $3 at lower quality than DVD or HDVD? You get to keep the movie (which you have paid for already anyway), yes you might copy it to your friends, but pirated films are lower quality anyway, unless you download a DVD rip.
The main problems the movie and music industry faces is their products are too expensive and they offer no incentive to buy the DVD or CD. This is where the games industry was smart - realise that you can’t prevent people from pirating, but give them added value when they buy legitimate product, ie updates and forum priveleges.
