American Blog Post

Happy 4th of July!!

We thought we’d use this most American of holidays to highlight one of the most annoyingly American of trends: using the word American as the first word in a movie title. Enough already! Here’s an American Rant for you.

We get it! We’re proud to be Americans! We like American things!

Fine! It’s an easy way to pander to patriotic morons who, perhaps, don’t want to see a movie about a ninja. Too Asian-sounding. But, an American Ninja?! Well, HEE-HAW!!

We totally understand! American Prefix is good marketing, but seriously: enough already. I’ve started to wretch whenever I learn of another such film. Check this out — I just did a query through the films in Criticker’s database:

American Chart!

So to celebrate the 4th, we’ve compiled a full list of films with the word American in their titles. Feel free to scroll through, but we will not be held liable should your head explode:

  1. 1 Brutal

I’ve seen plenty of films with the word “Brazilian” in the title.. ;)

  2. 2 K

This is incorrect. Because “Chinese” is not even in there and I can at least name 10 of them right now.
    1) Chinese Connection
    2) Chinese Ghost Story
    3) Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
    4) Chinese Odyssey 2002
    5) Chinese Hero
    6) Chinese Tall Story
    7) Chinese Vampire Story 8) Chinese Torture Chamber
    9) Chinese Feast
    10) Intimate Confession of a Chinese Courtesean

    Therefore this list is wrong.

Well, the list isn’t wrong … we never said that ALL countries were included. But you’re right that “Chinese” is a pretty egregious omission. I just checked, and we have 12 films with that nationality in the title, placing it in 2nd place — but still FAR behind “America”.

Are there any other countries people are curious about?

    The Boys of Brazil
    Brazil
    Bye Bye Brazil
    The Bandit of Brazil
    Brazil 2000
    Carlota Joaquina, Princess of Brazil
    Far From Brazil
As well as 30 other films.

    Hi Elos!
Thanks, but our chart was a search through Criticker’s database for nationalities (American, Brazilian), not nations (America, Brazil). And we’re not saying that there are absolutely no films with the word “Brazilian” in existence. Just that there weren’t any in Criticker’s database of over 20000 films from around the world.

But thanks for the list… pretty interesting!

my favorite part of this post is that you made thumbnails for all those movies. Amaze!

Americans are terrifically insecure and insular. I know what you are thinking, but its true never the less. Seeing the word American everywhere makes them feel safe and secure, like Linus and his blanket. Cut them some slack, poor buggers.

  8. 8 Lolzer

America may be in their titles but foreign emigrants mostly made them. Gasbag.
