Neglected Gems: Fast, Cheap & Out of Control

Fast, Cheap & Out of Control @ Amazon

Errol Morris presents a master class in the power of editing with 1997′s “non-fiction” work, Fast, Cheap & Out of Control. The film chronicles the lives of 4 men with interesting careers, who are seemingly unconnected in any meaningful way, and has been classified as a “non-fiction” work as opposed to a documentary thanks to its eschewing of conventional methods.

In the movie, we are introduced to a lion tamer, an expert in hairless mole rats, a man who creates topiaries, and a robotics scientist from M.I.T. As the film progresses, Morris interweaves their disparate stories by cutting footage together, and showing visuals from one story with narration from another. In a unique way, Morris effectively demonstrates how interconnected everyone is, and how common themes permeate the lives of all humanity.

Fast, Cheap & Out of Control utilizes a number of film formats, and even introduced an invention new to filmmaking: the Interrotron, with which interview subjects are able to see both the camera and the person who is interviewing them, creating the illusion of eye contact with the audience.

Hairless Mole Rat Expert Ray Mendez

The movie is a singular experience, entirely unconventional and intelligently constructed. It’s earned a spot on our list of Neglected Gems because the few Criticker users who have seen it have given high marks to it. Errol Morris is one of our most talented documentarians, and his consistently wonderful films, and this one in particular, deserve not to be neglected…

Forum Watch: Introduce Yourself!

There’s a new sticky topic in the General Discussion forum called Introduce Yourself, which is serving as a way for people to say hello to the community and reveal a little about themselves. If you’re new to Criticker or to the forums, this is a good first step in meeting a great group of users and active community.

It’s our turn to take the mic, I suppose.

Hi. We’re Mike and Juergen.

I’m an American and Juergen is German. We met in Boston about 8 years ago, and since then have lived in Berlin (Germany), Western Ireland and currently Valencia (Spain). I’m a native of Minnesota, but did most of my growing up in Ohio where I studied Computer Science at Ohio University, in Athens. Juergen grew up in Darmstadt, Germany (close to Frankfurt) and is a professional photographer.

We started Criticker when my then-employer began laying off its workers without restraint or remorse. With time on our hands, we embarked on a project with the aim of matching users that had the same taste. The idea actually came when my mom appeared to me in a dream, complaining about the fact that no critic shared her taste in movies, so “why should I listen to them?” Then she turned into a vampire and bit my head off. Over a period of months, we developed and eventually released Criticker.com — albeit a version barely unrecognizable to users today.

Criticker 1.0

Currently, we spend a ton of time on Criticker, but we’re also at work on other (more lucrative) projects, such as Lastminute-Auction.com (an Ebay tool and our true breadwinner), Random-Good-Stuff.com (Juergen’s entertainment blog, peppered with his unique German humor) and HolaValencia.net (a blog dedicated to our new home town).

Juergen and I have extremely similar taste in film, owing to the fact that we spend way too much time together. We tend to most enjoy contemporary European cinema, but aren’t afraid to drop huge scores on big budget action flicks. Outside of movies, we’re both into travel & hiking, and Juergen still gets work as a professional photographer.

Phew! So, that’s us: the founders of Criticker. Now it’s your turn! Get to the forum, and introduce yourselves… we love finding out more about the people who make up the Criticker Community.

DVD Report – September 16th

You know it’s a poor week for new arrivals on DVD, when a film like Speed Racer is the most highly-rated. Not to intone that the Wachowskis’ film was at all beloved by the Criticker community. It was just slightly less despised than the others. The worst? Mike Meyers continues his sad slide into irrelevance with the painfully unfunny Love Guru… of course, we encourage you to buy it, anyway, as long as you’re using our links to do so!

Speed Racer152 Rankings – Average Tier 5.34

When she asks Tom to be her “maid” of honor, he reluctantly agrees just so he can attempt to stop the wedding and woo her. (imdb) Made of Honor @ Amazon

Trailer: Tom Tykwer’s The International

Germany’s Tom Tykwer is one of a very few directors whose every project excites us. An high-octane Interpol action flick staring Clive Owen & Naomi Watts sounds alright, but the knowledge that it’s from the creator of Run Lola Run and (the unaccountably overlooked) Perfume is a guarantee that it’s going to be intelligent and unique.

A district attorney (Watts) and Interpol agent (Owen) join forces to expose a powerful, corrupt bank, and end up on a chase that leads them from Berlin to Istanbul to New York. The film sounds awesome, and the trailer (via Twitchfilm) is great too:

The film is due for release in early 2009.

Heroes of Contentiousness #11: Stay

Stay @ Amazon

German-Swiss director Marc Foster followed two highly popular and critically acclaimed films, Monster’s Ball and Finding Neverland, with Stay, a glossy thriller and psychological mindfuck. The film bombed at the box office and was widely panned by critics. Regardless, it boasts a large number of fans and sports a very high FCQ of 47.22 among users of Criticker (that’s Film Contentious Quotient, and means almost equal numbers of people loved and hated the film, with very few who felt indifferent — details on the math here),

Stay is Forster’s attempt at one of those labyrinthine “is it real or isn’t it” plots which can work really well in movies (Mulholland Drive) or not (Vanilla Sky). Here, a psychiatrist tries to prevent a new patient’s announced suicide, embarking on a surreal journey which touches on life, reality and the afterlife. Whether the film is any good is up for debate, but what’s not is the pedigree of the cast (Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts and Ryan Gosling star), nor the beauty of Forster’s directorial style.

We at Criticker still haven’t seen this film, although we’re planning on it, so we can’t yet vote in this week’s poll. That means it’s up to you. Stay: is it GREAT or TERRIBLE?

Stay

  • Great! (73%, 8 Votes)
  • Terrible! (27%, 3 Votes)

Total Voters: 11

Here are a couple battling opinions from Criticker users.

lpelliott: “This movie is brilliant. It’s pretty abstract but if you really think about it you can figure it out, I did and I found it immensely rewarding. Beautiful and haunting.”

fowp: “A waste of time – one of those post-Memento ‘is it all a dream?’ type messes. ”

Last week’s poll is closed, and you’ve given the green light to I Heart Huckabees, by a fairly narrow margin. That film is officially “great”. Officially.

And here’s our up-to-date list of the top 10 most contentious films at Criticker … with today’s new entry!

1. Eyes Wide Shut – FCQ 59.96 – Poll Result: GREAT!

Hockey Mom: The Movie

Not this time, Putin!

Brought to you by The Disney Channel. That’s how Matt Damon describes the prospect of a Palin presidency…

We at Criticker don’t often get political, but The Palin Show has been the most riveting piece of entertainment we’ve seen in ages. And Damon’s right about one thing: the prospect of this person as President is equal parts absurd and terrifying …

maximum levels of political content breached — revert immediately to non-controversial entertainment fluff

Fine. Then, just let’s settle back with this clip of Sarah Palin holed up in Alaska, preparing for her first national interview, via Andrew Sullivan:
