Although Winona Ryder has the starring role, Girl, Interrupted is mainly known as the film which unleashed The Angelina on an unsuspecting world. Perhaps that’s why the film has as many starry-eyed devotees as haters. But whatever one’s opinion of The Angelina, it’s hard to deny that She was luminescent in this role. She is good at crazy, and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work.

But the film as a whole? It’s received a high Film Contentiousness Quotient of 45.36 (details on the math here), which means significant and equal numbers of users hated and loved it, without many in between. Some saw it as an honest and powerful examination of mental illness, though many critics derided its dependence on cliche and uneven storytelling.
