DVD Report – December 16th

A few of this week’s releases are actually due in stores on the 19th, so if you’re really eager for The House Bunny, Traitor, or The Women, you’ll just have to be patient. You should also probably get your head checked. This week’s biggest release is, of course, Mamma Mia!, a film that will surely fly off shelves. It is, like, totally the perfect holiday gift for your mom. And I don’t even know your mom!

They need a dose of what only the eternally bubbly Shelley can provide… but they will each learn on their own to stop pretending to be what others want them to be and start being themselves. HD Trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine

In our second comics-related trailer in as many weeks, we offer you a film that looks like it will be perhaps a little definitely a lot better than The Spirit. Check out X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Yup, Wolverine’s tough-guy line at the end of this trailer is far more entertaining than The Spirit’s “I’m gonna kill you all kinds of dead”. With a great cast that, in addition to Hugh Jackman, features Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth, this film is promising to be something great. It will be directed by Gavin Hood, who made his name with 2005′s unforgettable South African drama Tsotsi.

It looks like there are going to be other X-Men Origins films, though that might depend on how well Wolverine does in cinemas. Magento will likely get the treatment next, but who else would you like to see in their own film?

After Wolverine & Magento, which X-Men character should get an Origins film?

Heroes of Contentiousness #16 – Across the Universe

After bringing us the accomplished Frida and bewildering Titus, Julie Taymor turned her attention to Across the Universe which features two young lovers named Lucy and Jude, whose experiences are set to songs by The Beatles… if you can’t guess at least two of the songs given those character names, this probably isn’t the movie for you.

Much like the filmed version of Mamma Mia, the plot of Across the Universe is really just there to stitch together elaborately staged musical numbers. An amazing 33 Beatles songs appear at some point, including my favorites Dear Prudence and Happiness Is a Warm Gun. You either really love concepts like this, or you really hate them. The FCQ for this film is a staggering 57.82 (that’s Film Contentiousness Quotient: details here), which makes it the most contentious movie we’ve featured so far.

Taymor is probably best known for her incredibly successful staging of The Lion King, so she definitely knows her way around musical numbers. But reviews for this film were extremely mixed, and Criticker users were the same. So, let’s decide right now. Across the Universe: Great or Terrible?

Here are a couple battling opinions from Criticker users.

Biedronski: “This movie made me whip out my Beatles CDs. Each song was visually amazing in the movie. Joe Cocker singing “Come Together” is worth seeing alone. It was fun watching with my dad and trying to call what song was going to come up.”

flyingwhales: “What’s that sound? Oh, I think it’s John Lennon and George Harrison rolling over in their graves.”

Last week, you voted on The Butterfly Effect — Ashton Kutcher’s lone shining moment of excellence. And by a close margin, it was deemed GREAT.

And here’s our up-to-date list of the top 10 most contentious films at Criticker:

1. Across the Universe – FCQ 57.82 – Poll Result: Pending
2. Eyes Wide Shut – FCQ 57.65 – Poll Result: GREAT!
3. The Rocky Horror Picture Show – FCQ 54.41 – Poll Result: GREAT!
4. Dumb & Dumber – FCQ 51.24 – Poll Result: GREAT!
5. The Butterfly Effect – FCQ 50.92 – Poll Result: GREAT!
6. King Kong – FCQ 49.84 – Poll Result: GREAT!
7. Saw – FCQ 49.23 – Poll Result: TIE!
8. Stay – FCQ 48.94 – Poll Result: GREAT!
9. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest – FCQ 48.93 – Poll Result: TERRIBLE!

10. I Am Sam – FCQ 48.37 – Poll Result: TERRIBLE!

Thoughts on Some New Films at Criticker …

The Hive (2008)

A film about ants who eat people alive. Fair enough. But why is it that the cover art for such movies tend to feature young, voluptuous women being eaten alive? What does this say about us? Is it meant to be titillating? I fear that it is… and the idea that more people will buy this film because it’s a hot chick rather than an ugly man suffering an agonizing bloody death, is far more terrifying than fictional killer ants.

A group of wizards-to-be spend half their time in the “normal” world, and half their time in the magical alternate world of Halloweentown, where they visit a school for witches and experience adventures like that of “Kalabar’s Revenge”. Isn’t it enough that Disney so blatantly rips off Harry Potter? No, they must also conjure up the most unoriginal title imaginable for their saga: Halloweentown. Seriously, could that be more leaden or generic? Has Disney absolutely no shame? Make sure to stick around for Halloweentown III: Halloweentown High!

Hug tight to the handsome priest, young Mickey Rooney. He will comfort you… Look not away from his smoldering gaze! He is one of the Men of Boys Town.

DVD Report – December 9th

Quality, not quantity! That’s a good motto to live by, and it goes for this week’s relatively small batch of new releases too. We almost always feature more films than we’re doing today, but very rarely do we get to heartily recommend two of them. Everyone already probably knows how great Dark Knight is. This is a movie that belongs in your personal collection now.

Another, much different film is nearly as good: Man on Wire. This is a documentary about a French trapeze artist’s walk between the Twin Towers. I don’t want to give anything away, but… he just about makes it, when suddenly The Joker appears on the other side and cuts the rope. A bloody, shocking ending to an otherwise worthy film.
