Heroes of Contentiousness #17 – Chicago

For the second time in a row, a much-loved & much-hated musical takes the stage in our list of contentious films: 2002′s Oscar winning Chicago. Its FCQ is pretty high, at 47.28. (FCQ is the Film Contentiousness Quotient — details on the math can be found here).

It might be surprising that the film which was chosen as the year’s best is so controversial amongst Criticker users — but considering that it’s chock full of sparkly song and dance numbers, perhaps not. Musicals are films which rarely appeal to everyone, but Chicago’s haters are unusually full of vehemence. Amusingly so, in fact.

Chicago’s plot is pretty simple: a couple of murderesses scheme and compete for fame from within the penitentiary. But of course, the plot is mostly there as a structure to connect the various musical numbers. The cast includes John C. Reilly (arguably, the show-stealer), Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones, RenĂ©e Zellweger and Queen Latifah, all of whom sing and dance with varying degrees of success.

This was Rob Marshall’s first film, and although the Best Picture Oscar must be nice, he’ll only truly be able to sleep well if Criticker users decide once and for all, whether Chicago was great or terrible. So, which is it?

  • Terrible! (48%, 12 Votes)

Here are a couple battling opinions from Criticker users.

Sapphire: “Flamboyant, sizzingly sexy retelling of the classic Bob Fosse stage musical. Superlative in every way. Great cast (Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah & John C. Reilly). The most striking performance, though, belongs to Catherine Zeta Jones (who also won an Oscar). Her Velma is a force of nature that can not be denied.”

jenna: “THE WORST MOVIE IN CINEMATIC HISTORY! A DISGRACE! RUBBISH! INSULTING! STILL CAN’T BELIEVE IT! ”

In the last poll, you voted on Across the Universe, Julie Taymor’s musical tribute to the Beatles. By a decent margin, it passed the test… it’s GREAT!

And here’s our up-to-date list of the top 10 most contentious films at Criticker:

1. Eyes Wide Shut – FCQ 56.91 – Poll Result: GREAT!
2. Across the Universe – FCQ 56.18 – Poll Result: GREAT!
3. The Rocky Horror Picture Show – FCQ 55.41 – Poll Result: GREAT!
4. Stay – FCQ 51.86 – Poll Result: GREAT!
5. Dumb & Dumber – FCQ 49.84 – Poll Result: GREAT!
6. Saw – FCQ 49.81 – Poll Result: TIE!
7. The Butterfly Effect – FCQ 49.6 – Poll Result: GREAT!
8. Brotherhood of the Wolf – FCQ 49.37 – Poll Result: GREAT!
9. King Kong – FCQ 49.1 – Poll Result: GREAT!
10. I Am Sam – FCQ 48.37 – Poll Result: TERRIBLE!

DVD Report – January 20th (Inauguration Edition!)

Well… there aren’t really any very compelling new releases this week. Which means, there is now officially no excuse to not watch today’s inauguration of Barack Obama as President of the USA. The choice is yours — history in the making, and the conclusion of one of America’s most intense and spectacular dramas, or pretty-boy Jonathan Rhys Meyer (who I find strangely ugly) saving foreign children in The Children of Huang Shi, yet another film with the philosphy that “a story about non-Caucasians is alright as long as a white Westerner is the star who saves them”. Blech. Choose Obama.

Neglected Gems: Deliver Us From Evil

Sexual abuse by Catholic clergy… there’s no topic more exciting or enjoyable! Gather the family around the tube with a bucket of buttery popcorn, and a box of tissues for tears of laughter and joyful emotion, and pop in Deliver Us From Evil, documentary filmmaker Amy J. Berg’s searing 2006 investigation into the controversy.

Okay, so it’s not a bucketful of laughs, but Deliver Us From Evil is an important work — perhaps the defining cinematic statement on the church’s complicity in the abuse of thousands of minors. Over 100,000 people in the United States alone have claimed that they were at one time abused in the church. It’s a staggering number, almost impossible to believe, but Berg grounds her film by investigating the crimes of a single abuser, Oliver O’Grady, as well as the the cover-up by the church which enabled him to prey upon untold numbers of children.

Berg’s film, nominated for an Oscar and winner of multiple awards, has been unanimously praised by critics for its bravery and unflinching attempt to expose the rot and corruption in a powerful institution. The result is a work more riveting that most thrillers, more terrifying than most horror films, and extremely intelligent. According to Owen Glieberman of Entertainment weekly, “The brilliance of Deliver Us From Evil … is the way that Berg portrays a kind of terrifying psychological chain, linking the abuse, the obscene entitlement experienced by a man like O’Grady, and the squirmy arrogance of the Catholic authorities who, in effect, hid his crimes, giving allowance to child rape because they believed their mission to be above sin.”

Not very many Criticker users have seen this important documentary, which is a shame, but earns it a spot in our list of Neglected Gems. Almost all of the few who have seen it have given Deliver Us From Evil high marks. Check out the trailer, and then make sure to hunt this excellent film down for a full viewing.

DVD Report – January 13th

An interesting, though not highly praised, set of new releases hit shelves this week. The most highly regarded by Criticker users is Appaloosa, which is a must for any Ed Harris fan — he directed, wrote and stars in it. Appaloosa won the Boston Film Festival earlier this year, and also features Viggo Mortensen. Or for spookier fare, check out Jack Bauer vs. the forces of evil in Mirrors … a film that received some very mixed reviews at Criticker.

Forum Watch: Best Monologues

The topics which Criticker’s forum users find for discussion never fail to surprise, and this was a fun subject started at the start of the new year by Bojanglesmn: Best Monologues

What are they? I’ll just pick two so hopefully I don’t spoil everyone’s.

Joe Pesci in JFK

(not quite a monologue b/c it’s interrupted a few times.)

Sean Penn in The Thin Red Line
“What difference you think you can make, one single man in all this madness?…” Don’t think that one’s on youtube, but it’s great if anyone who’s seen TTRL remembers it.

There have been a lot of other great monologues put forth in the forum, including:
· Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood (flaky)
· Giovanni Ribisi in Saving Private Ryan (Hells_Zargon)
· Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now (Pickpocket)

A lot of other great monologues are mentioned in this forum as well. One of my personal favorites is Edward Norton in 25th Hour — a speech and segment which completely turned that film on its head. (Warning: profanity!!)

What about your favorite Movie Monologues? Get over to the forum, and share your thoughts!

DVD Report – January 6th

The first batch of DVDs in the new year is a rather uninspiring bunch, with only Pineapple Express earning solid praise at Criticker. But as has happened in the past, the movies which more of our users have seen are also the more highly-ranked. We suspect this to be a comment upon the film-choosing savvy of the Criticker Community. After all, 2008′s worst film, Disaster Movie, was also the week’s least watched amongst clever Criticker users. Nice!
