Collection Watch: Adapated from a Play

Ever since the advent of cinema, stage plays have proven a fertile source of material. Most of the imaginative work is already done, so just put a camera in front of the stage and, violà, a movie!

1962′s Long Day’s Journey into Night

No, most filmed adaptations of plays demonstrate a bit more effort than that, and many are worthy masterpieces in their own right. User djross has started a public collection called “Adapted from a Play“, which gathers many of the most famous and best adaptations.

Great playwrights like Tennessee Williams, Oscar Wilde, and Arthur Miller are represented in this collection, as well as many more. As for all collections, Criticker members can regenerate and sort on PSIs; so if you’re in the mood for Broadway but don’t want to get off your couch, you can find the perfect title.

Tribeca was founded in 2002 as a direct response to the 9/11 attack in NYC. It attracts a lot of attention, and A-List celebrities. One of 2008′s most-loved films at Criticker won last year’s big prize: Let the Right One In.

Neglected Gems: Battle for Haditha

The USA might have a new, less blood-thirsty, president in Barack Obama, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be willing to look with a critical eye at the wreckage it’s wrought in the none-too-distant past. In 2007, filmmaker Nick Broomfield released a drama about one of the most shameful episodes of the Iraqi War — the Battle for Haditha. The few Criticker users who’ve seen it have all given it high marks, earning it a spot in our list of Neglected Gems.

Months after war was waged in the western Iraqi city of Hadith, 24 Iraqis — most of them non-combatants, women and children — were killed by a small group of US soldiers. The soldiers were all eventually acquitted, but the incident was internationally condemned, and was another unneeded black eye on the reputation of the USA. The film is based on this event.

Battle for Haditha is not a documentary, but a drama staged and shot in an unconventional manner. Instead of a script, actors were given the setup and general instructions and ad-libbed all the details. Despite the love of the Criticker community and a Best Director award for Broomfield at the San Sebastien film festival, Battle for Haditha won only mixed reviews from US critics. It should come as perhaps no surprise that more conservative media outlets shared the New York Post’s opinion, that it served as an “exposé only of [Broomfield's] senseless contempt for the military.”

Movies which critique military action are too rare, especially when released while the action is still going on. But even though it’d be easiest to leave the moral stain of Haditha forgotten in our collective past, we should be brave enough to keep its memory alive.

The Reader! The Spirit! The Caller!
The Oscar Attempt! The Hilariously Bad Comic Remake! The Film No One Saw or Cares About!

Ach… of all the films out this week on DVD, only The Reader managed to get better-than-average reviews, and… I don’t know. I didn’t see it in theaters and feel almost physically repelled by it. Yeah yeah, Kate Winslet is a truly remarkable actress and the Nazi atrocities can never be forgotten. But… is it wrong that I’d rather watch The Spirit?

Shall We Give Dan Brown One More Shot?

What do you say, everyone… should we bother to get excited about the second big-budget Dan Brown adaptation? After watching the trailer for Angels & Demons, the follow-up to The Da Vinci Code, I’m inclined to.

The Da Vinci Code was heart-breakingly underwhelming. Here was a book which was, we believe, literally written with the intention of being an awesome movie. Ancient religious cover-ups, a murderous albino monk (for Christ’s sake!), a high-octane race to some of the world’s coolest places, and opening with that murder in the Lourve? It’s shocking that the movie was so lame. Inconceivable.

Trailers can be deceiving, but Angels & Demons does look like a step up. What do you all think?

Apparently, the Vatican plans on banning the film. That wins it at least a few points from our camp! By taking the premise serious enough to even acknowledge, isn’t the church doing itself unwarranted damage?

Angels & Demons hits theaters on May 15th.

Heroes of Contentiousness #20 – Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith

Leagues better than the first two prequels, but far inferior to any of the original Star Wars films … this puts the third (or last, depending on your opinion of continuity) chapter of Lucas’ epic squarely in the “Contentious” zone with a sky-high FCQ of 52.32 (FCQ = Film Contentiousness Quotient: details here).

There’s not much argument that Revenge of the Sith was easily the best of of Lucas’ much despised trilogy of prequels. The simple lack of screen time for Jar Jar Binks guaranteed that much. But this one also had true drama as opposed to cutsey kids playing laser tag in a radical, futuristic F1 race. Hayden Christensen met early criticisms of his questionable acting talent head-on by providing a decent portrayal of Anakin Skywalker’s descent into the dark side. And was that a faint whiff of political commentary I detected? Lucas, you dog!

But it didn’t convince everyone. The dialogue (particularly all the hilarious romantic scenes) was awful. And the CGI, while improved, was still pretty bad. But what do you think? Did George Lucas redeem himself with Revenge of the Sith or not?

Revenge of the Sith

  • Great! (57%, 25 Votes)
  • Terrible! (43%, 19 Votes)

Total Voters: 44

Here are a couple battling opinions from Criticker users.

Filligan: “The best of the Prequels, definately. McGregor is sadly unimpressive, but Christensen is surprisingly not! It’s dark and moody, like Empire, and the lightsaber battles are superb fun. I thought the score was Oscar-worthy, too.”

the_phil: “Ugh. Lucas left himself far too much to do, and Anakin’s downfall is tedious, moronic and far, far too easily achieved. Add terrible dialogue, a dire performance from Christiansen and you are left with a very bad taste in the mouth.”

Last week, we put The Life of David Gale to the vote, and are pleased to announce an all-too-seldom verdict of terrible! This one wasn’t even close.

And here’s our up-to-date list of the top 10 most contentious films at Criticker:
