Two films new to DVD this week are worthy of the highly-prized moniker of Criticker Pick! One, you’ve definitely heard of (and most probably already seen), and another which isn’t quite so well known. So, we won’t waste a lot of words on Up, and instead encourage you to pick up Ballast, a powerful drama set in the deep south. It was a favorite at Sundance, and this beautifully shot film is definitely worth your time.
By tying thousands of balloons to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn’t alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip. Up @ Amazon
