This morning, we introduced new changes to Criticker’s navigation scheme. So far, there haven’t been too many exasperated emails demanding that we change it back, so… I think that counts a success!
Here are some of the highlights:
| 1. Live Updating # Films – When you rank a new film, or delete a ranking, the number of rankings is automatically updated. | ![]() |
| 2. Forum/Blog Highlights – We’ve replaced the (ugly) link bubbles with the latest topics being discussed at the blog and forums. | ![]() |
| 3. Improved Submenu – Drop down menus is so 2008! Criticker is so 2010! The new menu layout is a huge step up… the options stay active even when not hovered upon, and don’t get in the way of other content. | ![]() |
| 4. Overall Style – Cleaner and sleeker. This is the first of many stylistic improvements we plan on making in the new year — others will be less noticeable, but we’re going to be constantly making changes to improve the way Criticker feels and works. | |

Would be even more better if “YOU” would be highlighted by default, so we could see submenu without hovering.
Cheers!
Update – Changed! Depending on what page you’re on, the submenu starts out active… if you’re on one of the “Explore” pages, such as Film Database or Collections, that will be the one open by default. We agree that this helps the style.
This so far is the main suggestion made by others… we’ll probably be implementing it shortly. Thanks!!
Hey, pretty cool. Thanks!
I actually wanted to send you an email about how you should not change the site’s style a while ago, I just found found perfect in its simplicity, but this is better, to be frank. Good work guys!
I seem to have found a bug. I am unable to open any messages, read or unread.
oh yeah, and the new layout doesn’t have any indication of whether or not you received a message without looking at your profile page.
@kyle – Ergh! Thanks for the reports… we’ll look into this tomorrow.
isn’t it a bit too white?
I’d prefer the ads on the bottom of the page, but otherwise this is superb.
Nice Work!
please solve the messages stuff
I think this should be fixed now — thanks again for reporting it!
Some things I noticed and don’t bother me, but maybe you should know: when I ranked a film and started writing a review, but later changed my mind and deleted it, the ranking had a “mini review” indicator, but nothing written as a mini review, just blank. Also, when I change ranking, film counter changes( 1), but it is correct again, after refreshing the page.
We’ve fixed the bug where the # Films was jumping on an edit, and I think that should be working now… still looking into the empty mini-review problem. Thanks for reporting these!
How are we supposed to know when we have new messages?
Love the new navigation. It’s a hundred times easier to use on my phone.
