DVD Report – April 20th

It’s here! But, not in 3D. And, entirely devoid of special features. Sigh, the huge box office success of Avatar has truly awakened Hollywood’s worst profit-maximizing instincts. Fox is going to release Avatar three times. First, the sucker edition, due out on the 22nd (Earth day! Puke). Second, the “normal” edition, with the deleted and extended scenes and the extras that you can normally expect. Finally, sometime in 2011, the 3D version — the only one most of us care about, anyway.

And you know there are people who will buy them all. For all the complaining Hollywood does about piracy, I think it’s clear who the real thieves are. If you don’t feel like feeding the Fox, check out Summer Hours, a moving French drama and this week’s lone Criticker Pick.

Crazy HeartAverage Tier 6.46

Is he ready to leave behind a life playing in the shadow of Tommy, the upstart kid he once mentored? Crazy Heart @ Amazon

Kick-Ass & Hit-Girl Will Hit and Kick You!

It doesn’t have the most original premise of all time (see: this entire TV series), but luckily for Kick-Ass, that’s a suggestion and not a requirement, as long as you’ve got good acting, great action and genuine comedy. And, of course, excellent source material.

Mark Millar’s 2008 comic Kick-Ass (Icon) was beloved by fans, and their fears about it being ruined by Hollywood have happily turned out unfounded. Initial reviews by Criticker users have been uniformly positive. It wasn’t able to kick total ass at the box office this weekend, though, finishing 2nd. But for a superhero comedy, maybe that’s not too bad… how many other good superhero comedies have there ever been?

New Kumpel Page Layout

You might have already noticed — our effort to revamp and streamline the pages of Criticker has arrived to Your Kumpels Page. The functionality is still the same, and this page hasn’t changed a lot. We cut down on the amount of advertising, and shuffled the boxes around to fit better in the new scheme which is slowly conquering the site.

If you’re not using Kumpels, you’re missing some of the best functionality on Criticker! By marking your friends or the people in whose opinions your especially interested as Kumpels, you can get special recommendations just from them and keep an eye on their recent activity.

We’ve been asked us why we decided to use the German term “Kumpel”. The answer is simple: Darum!

15 Great Movie Trailer Re-Cuts

Chim-chim-cher-SHRIEK!

The guys at Ranker.com have collected 15 of the greatest movie trailer re-cuts on the web. A lot of them you might know… The Dark Knight re-imagined as an 80s-style dramedy, how Wes Anderson might have done Saving Private Ryan… but each one is worth a look. The creativity and talent of people surprises me every day.

“Scary Mary” Poppins is my favorite. I always found that movie kind of creepy anyway.

Collection Watch: AFI’s Top Ten Fantasy

In 2008, the American Film Institute released a set of 10 Top Ten lists, celebrating the best American films in the most important genres. Criticker user Cuculiza has been gathering the entries in a series of collections, such as the one focused on AFI’s Top 10 Fantasy Films of all time.

King Kong (1933) Harvey (1950)
The Wizard of Oz (1939) Big (1988)
The Thief of Bagdad (1940) Field of Dreams (1989)
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) Groundhog Day (1993)
Miracle on 34th Street (1947) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

It’s apparent that an effort was made to honor films from a variety of generation, though the 30s and 40s are particularly well represented. Half of the honored films come from those two decades alone. But it’s difficult to take beef with any of the selections, all of them landmark motion pictures that every cinema fan should be familiar with.

Can you guess which is the one Criticker users most loved? Lord of the Rings! Surprising to me. The least loved was Big — not so surprising.

I would have liked to see more modern films chosen, such as Being John Malkovich. What do you consider the most glaring omission?

DVD Report – April 11th

The best new DVD release this week is Pirate Radio, about a … pirate radio station. It got solid marks from users of Criticker, but personally, the previews really turned me off (“serious” actors can be wacky & groovy!), and I find myself unwilling to give it a chance. Defendor also got decent reviews, and looks a lot more interesting.

Pirate RadioAverage Tier 6.40
A period comedy about an illegal radio station in the North Sea in the 1960′s. Pirate Radio @ Amazon

DefendorAverage Tier 5.98
A comedy centered around three characters: an everyday guy who comes to believe he’s a superhero, his psychiatrist, and the teenager he befriends. Defendor @ Amazon

Three Kingdoms – Resurrection of the DragonAverage Tier 3.82
His country torn asunder by civil war, Zhao, a common man heeds the call of duty and from the humblest of roots rises through the ranks on wings of courage and cunning to command an army charged with liberating the land from an evil warlord. Inspiring by action, honor and a dream of unifying his divided nation, Zhao’s heroism becomes legend, but as the years pass and the throne changes hands the war still rages on… Three Kingdoms – Resurrection of the Dragon @ Amazon

TendernessAverage Tier 4.00
A policeman (Crowe) works to figure out whether a violent teen (Foster) murdered his family. Tenderness @ Amazon

The Slammin’ SalmonAverage Tier 4.10
When a boxer turned restaurateur (Michael Clarke Duncan) announces a contest to his waitstaff, the good news is that the winner will get a $10,000 bonus. The bad news? The loser will be on the receiving end of a heavy-duty smack-down at the hands of the champ himself. The Slammin’ Salmon @ Amazon

We Would Love You, Phillip Morris!

One of the movies we’ve been looking forward to for, oh, 3 years has been I Love You Phillip Morris. And now it’s been shelved (or “delayed indefinitely“).

I don’t get it. The most costly aspect of a film is the actual making of it, no? How can shelving it be the most sound financial move? Sure, the heartland of America probably wouldn’t embrace a gay romance (shudder!), but the film played well in festivals and has two big-name stars in Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. It’s going to make something in the theaters!

They made a movie with Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor as gay cell-mates, and now they’re not letting me watch it! Argh! Well, here’s the trailer; it’ll have to suffice until the eventual release onto DVD.
