Star Wars as a Silent Movie

Rudolf Valentino, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, Carrie Fisher?! Although missing the classic score and sound effects, such as Darth Vader’s breathing or the lightsaber’s hum, Star Wars is strangely compelling as a silent film. With dramatically costumed actors scurrying about futuristic sets, one could almost see the film as a precursor to Metropolis.

What other films do you think might benefit from the Silent Movie treatment? I’d love to see a horror flick like Wolf Creek… it would just make it more terrifying.

DVD Report – August 10th

A couple mediocre comedies headline this week’s batch of new releases. Date Night was particularly disappointing … Tina Fey and Steve Carrell should have delivered something a lot more clever. The only stand-out this week comes from France. Welcome is a devastating story about a young illegal immigrant’s attempts to get to London and reunite with his girlfriend, and the swimming instructor who reluctantly takes him under his wing. Really recommended.

Date NightAverage Tier 4.67
Married, middle-aged and with children is hardly a recipe for romance, but Tina Fey and Steve Carrell are determined to keep the spark alive in this Shawn Levy-helmed comedy about a date night gone horribly awry. Joining Fey and Carrell in this ensemble cast film are Mark Wahlberg, who plays a securities expert, James Franco as a slightly slow con man and Leighton Meester as the couple’s babysitter. Bilal is 17 and comes from Iraq. He left his native land shortly after his girlfriend emigrated to England and is now in the midst of an adventurous journey across Europe in order to see her again. (imdb) Welcome @ Amazon

The JonesesAverage Tier 4.88
Keeping up with the Joneses (Demi Moore, David Duchovny, Amber Heard and Ben Hollingsworth) is next to impossible, considering they’re a family with good looks, fancy cars, a sprawling estate — and a shocking secret the neighbors would never guess. Gary Cole, Glenne Headly and Lauren Hutton co-star in this smart drama about the dark side of a material world from writer-director Derrick Borte. The Joneses @ Amazon

My Name Is KhanAverage Tier 4.26
Rizwan Khan, a Muslim from the Borivali section of Mumbai, suffers from Asperger syndrome (a form of high-functioning autism complicating socialization). The adult Rizwan marries a Hindu single mother, Mandira, in San Francisco. After 9/11, Rizwan is detained by authorities at LAX who mistake his disability for “suspicious” behavior. Following his arrest, he meets Radha, a therapist who helps him deal with his situation and his affliction… My Name Is Khan @ Amazon
