DVD Report – December 7th

No less than three new films released this week on DVD are good enough to be Criticker Picks. That doesn’t happen very often — Hollywood’s giving us plenty of quality options for Christmas. Inception is the one which everyone has likely seen, but don’t miss out on Sebastian Junger’s war documentary Restrepo, about a group of American soldiers defending Outpost Restrepo in Afghanistan. Rounding out the week of excellence is France’s Mademoiselle Chambon, about a simple family man who starts to fall for his son’s teacher.

R.I.P. Leslie Nielsen

Earlier this week, Leslie Nielsen passed away from complications due to pneumonia, at the ripe old age of 86. Most well known for his wacky comedic turns, such as the Naked Gun’s Lieutenant Frank Drebin, Nielsen was also well-received for more serious roles at the beginning of his career.

We’ve taken a look through our database for the best Leslie Nielsen films… Pop one in this weekend, and let his perfect comic timing and hilarious deadpan expressions remind you why he was so popular, for so long.

#1. Airplane! (1980)
An airplane crew takes ill. Surely the only person capable of landing the plane is an ex-pilot afraid to fly. But don’t call him Shirley.

RayIf it were possible to laugh yourself to death, then Airplane! would quickly have become the most prolific serial killer of all time. It is exceptionally funny, with some of the quickest humour and wittiest writing ever conceived. The jokes come hard and fast, each one causing so much laughter you’re likely to miss the following three. A truly timeless film, Aiplane! soars to dizzying heights of comedy.

Buy Scenes From a Marriage – Criterion Collection

#2. Forbidden Planet (1956)

A starship crew goes to investigate the silence of a planet’s colony only to find two survivors and a deadly secret that one of them has.

Buy Ali – Fear Eats the Soul – Criterion Collection

Leslie Nielsen stars as Police Squad’s own granite-jawed, rock-brained cop Frank Drebin, who bumbles across a mind-control scheme to assassinate Queen Elizabeth. Priscilla Presley, O.J. Simpson, a stuffed beaver, two baseball teams and an odd assortment of others join the wacko goings-on and blow the laugh-o-meter to smithereens.

Buy Annie Hall

#4. Creepshow (1982)

In this anthology, Nielsen stars in “Something to Tide You Over” — Richard Vickers (Leslie Nielsen), a coldblooded, wealthy husband, stages a terrible fate for his unfaithful wife, Becky (Gaylen Ross) and her lover, Harry Wentworth (Ted Danson) by burying them up to their necks on the beach, below the high tide line. He sets up closed-circuit TV cameras so the lovers can watch each other die. Richard is in for a surprise of his own when the people he murdered return as waterlogged, seaweed-covered zombies intent on getting revenge of their own.

Buy Manhattan

Lieutenant Drebin discovers that his ex-girlfriend’s new beau is involved in a plot to kidnap a scientist who advocates solar energy

Buy Minnie and Moskowitz

And if you’re looking for the worst… look no further than 2001: A Space Travesty

DVD Report – November 30th

Amazingly, the new Twilight film isn’t the worst movie released on DVD this week! It’s not even the worst vampire movie this week. That dishonor goes to the “comedy” which tries to parody the Twilight films. Honestly — how is it possible to fail at making fun of Twilight? If you want the answer to that burning question, check out Vampires Suck — with a horrendous average tier of 1.45.

Knight and DayAverage Tier 4.23
A wholesome, Midwestern woman accidentally gets involved with an international super spy and is forced to flee the country with him while he protects a dangerous new piece of technology. Knight and Day @ Amazon

Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Balthazar can’t do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protege. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice @ Amazon

Vampires SuckAverage Tier 1.45
From the creators of Disaster Movie and Meet the Spartans comes a spoof of pop culture and teenage vampire movies starring Jenn Proske as Becca, a high schooler who must choose between two hunky boys who both have killer smiles. While surrounded by vampires, werewolves (wereChihuahuas, anyone?) and gossipy teens with their own romantic dilemmas, the neurotic Becca also copes with her overprotective father and the school’s impending prom.
