DVD Report – May 17th

The best new film this week on DVD is the latest action flick from Jason Statham. Unfortunately, that speaks more to the shabbiness the competition than to the quality of The Mechanic. Still, Ben Foster’s always a pleasure to watch and, in when you’ve had a stressful day, watching Statham kick ass all over the place can be cathartic.

The MechanicAverage Tier 3.95
Jason Statham stars as an experienced hit man who decides he’s ready to retire his weapons once and for all — after he finishes training eager young apprentice Steve McKenna (Ben Foster) in the ways of the professional kill. But the assassin’s bosses are not pleased when they discover their man is giving away his trade secrets. Simon West directs and Donald Sutherland co-stars in this action-packed remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson thriller. The Mechanic @ Amazon

The RiteAverage Tier 3.38
Despite his conviction that demonic possession is just so much supersitious mumbo jumbo, Catholic priest-in-training Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue) journeys to Rome to attend a special exorcism school being taught at the Vatican. Before long, true-believer Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) introduces the young cleric to the devil’s power firsthand. The Rite @ Amazon

Vanishing on 7th StreetAverage Tier 2.77
When a massive power outage plunges the city of Detroit into total darkness, a disparate group of individuals find themselves alone. Soon the daylight begins to disappear completely, and as the survivors gather in an abandoned tavern, they realize the darkness is out to get them, and only their rapidly diminishing light sources can keep them safe. The RoommateAverage Tier 2.38
While acclimating to campus life, college freshman Sara (Minka Kelly) begins to realize that her new roommate, Rebecca (Leighton Meester), is becoming obsessed with her. When the unhinged Rebecca starts targeting Sara’s friends and loved ones, can she save them — and herself? The Roommate @ Amazon

I Want Your MoneyAverage Tier 2.00
The film contrasts two views of role that the federal government should play in our daily lives using the words and actions of Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama. I Want Your Money @ Amazon
