Summary: In postwar London, a young couple and their baby find a home in 10 Rillington Place, a so-so little flat whose downstairs neighbor, John Reginald Christie, is a little creepy. Unbeknownst to the pair, Christie has a history of killing women with gas and having sex with their dead bodies, and he has eyes for the young wife, Beryl Evans... (imdb)

Attenborough is great with his every manipulation of those around him being squirm inducing, sometimes enraging, and the claustrophobic atmosphere and drab, down to earth presentation all combining to make the tension often unbearable. The commentary on the justice system is suitably frustrating whilst never being heavy-handed. Hurt, for me, was a bit over the top at points, and I would have liked it if the film had told us more about the way the police had beaten Evans to force a confession.

In postwar London an oblivious couple and their baby find a home in 10 Rillington Place, a so-so little flat whose downstairs neighbor murders and rapes women because of testosterone related inadequacies. The idiocy of Tim (John Hurt) seems non-reality based but nope, this is a true story, people really are this stupid, and the consequences of their stupidity make for a sad outcome.

En god "dårlig" film. Den slendrer derhenad og man ækles mere og mere over den utiltalende og feje Christie, over samfundets bukken for "borgerskabet" og man befries da han bliver taget.

The tension isn't perfect but the film still keeps you on edge all the way through. The commentary on the justice system is quite well played, effective but very subtle and natural.

Not scary or exciting, just cruel, voyeuristic, and unpleasant. It doesn't help that Attenborough's skin wig is sometimes really obvious

A simple but very good thriller, actually one of the better true-story serial killer movies I've seen. The directing is understated, almost matter-of-factly, and relies on a deliberate, moderate pacing without bells and whistles. John Hurt's acting is suitably distraught and never quite over the top, whereas Attenborough's is just okay.

Good acting by Attenborough and a somewhat interesting story. But it's destroyed by dreary and plodding production. It is drudgery to watch instead of captivating the viewer.

Undeniably well done, creating an almost unbearably menacing and claustrophobic atmosphere, as well as an overarching sense of unfolding tragedy. Furthermore, the case was important in British legal history, and thus perhaps worthy subject matter. Yet the fact remains there is little pleasure in it for the viewer, so that, for example, there is in the end almost no desire to ever sit through the experience again. No doubt this was the filmmaker's point.
