Summary: A naive young man assumes a dead man's identity and finds himself embroiled in an underground world of power, violence, and chance where men gamble behind closed doors on the lives of other men.
Humorless and dry would put it nicely. Dull and, for a lack of better words, weird would be what I would call it. Strangely off-kilter in that the lack of narration strips away any tension.
A naive goof desperate for money inadvertently ends up becoming a player in a high stakes version of Russian Roulette. The lead is all bug eyes and clenched teeth, and Mickey Rourke's character is nothing but time filler. Ray Winstone and Statham's characters were more interesting, but the film kinda peters out to an underwhelming ending. Apparently this is a remake, I may have to track down the original to see if it's any better. Cool premise, middling execution.
Jason Statham movies are a guilty pleasure for me, but this is just TERRIBLE. It's stupid beyond belief.
One day I'd love to hear the people behind this try to justify it. I hope they didn't make any money on it.
I don't know why he felt he needed to remake it with big stars (unless he was hoping to make money but I doubt he did) because this version loses most of the tension and style of the original. The performances range from good to mediocre and the added storylines do nothing but muddle the film. Decent if for whatever reason you can't stand reading the subtitles on a much better film.
The idea of the game was interesting, some tension here and there were also okay. But as one movie it did not work, the beginning was way too slow and the title was the lamest in long time. Awoke curiosity for the original.
This film was strangely compelling. In spite of a formulaic plot, it was well acted and engaging. Unfortunately, the ironic ending was boring - not bad, just boring.
Haven't seen the original yet.. But this movie was ok. I didn't appreciate the ending though.. the guy walking through the tunnel... It made you think; and then, a guy walking through a tunnel......... It was a good movie, but to end it like that.. hmm
After seeing the original this just seems to be a watered down version. The original is more intense and gripping and one could associate with the tension during the shooting scenes. If you havent seen the original this is worthwhile.
