Summary: A unique cinematic journey, "2001: A Space Odyssey" travels across enormous distances of both space and time. The story it tells is on the one hand about the collective adventure of human life on and off this planet. But it is also about something lying beyond the bounds of humanity, something lying in the true realms of the mysterious. (by djross)
A timeless experience that completely and utterly catches the mood (or lack of) of the void that we affectionately call the final frontier. It's both a meditation and a dark ritual. The sound-track is beautiful and is used to great effect, but it's the reflective, and uncomfortable and provocative silence that ruffles the most feathers. Visually there are few films that match this, and here time is no factor as everything plays itself out in its own due course, free from the speed of daily life.
Timeless. Beautiful. Without equal. It's difficult to imagine 2001 ever aging at any point, even if the effects become staler, and its techniques are forever emulated by all comers, the film will still have its own unspeakable beauty, its divine ability to speak volumes without a single sound, and the pure humanity that Kubrick managed to infuse within an nonliving thing, all will capture the imagination for ages to come. It's simply one of the greatest films ever made.
Long, massively overrated, disjointed, yet still an epic that deserves merit. Soundtrack and visuals are still stunning and awe inspiring. ...What are you doing, Dave?
Wow, it's so weirdly oddball, but there is something that makes this movie awesome and Kubrick one of the brightest and biggest minds in the world of cinematography. 2001 is full great visuals and scenes - pure beauty I would say in it's outlook and a deep well of meanings inside. Well, it's impossible to interpret one way only and I think, that is what Kubrick wanted - make people think. The way I see the meaning, makes 2001 one of the greatest pieces of art I've ever seen.
Think the last 20 minutes is bad acid trip hippy bollocks, and they lost points on the lack of accuracy on the space walk (why park so far away? No tethers?!). Otherwise great!
Really got into this movie even through there were a bunch of film students whining like dumb children about the long stretches without dialogue behind me. Fuck those guys.
