Summary: 2009 Lost Memories unfolds from an intriguing premise: what if An Jung-geun had failed to assassinate Ito Hirobumi in Harbin, 1909, and this single incident opened a completely different history, one in which Japan had never lost the Second World War, and Korea had never gained independence. Starts out as a fairly straight alternate history thriller - sort of a Korean answer to Fatherland - set in a world where Japan was on the allies' side in WWII and 65 years later have turned Korea into another Japanese province. Halfway through it takes a sharp turn into science fiction, which I'm not sure was necessary, but it maintains enough tempo and character to still be enjoyable even as the plot spirals off into timey wimey wibbly wobbly-ness.

A halfway decent blockbuster beginning crashes and burns in its third act, asking the audience to suspend its disbelief way too much. (And what's with the girl?) Since it appeals to a kind of nationalistic fervor, rewrites a history without fault or blame and relishes in its abundant violence, I would say that this kind of good/evil dichotomy is not only simplistic, it's dangerous.
