The characters are lifeless and the movie is very dull and dreary up until the climax. Ichikawa's stylish flair is magnificent as always, but seems wholly inappropriate to the material. I do like how he subverts tradition by not even revealing the insult that started everything... but he ignores all of the characters' motivations almost entirely. I felt nothing while watching this except occasional awe at the beautiful images.
