Joseph H. Lewis does his best, but Scott is miscast (a former riverboat gambler?), Hale lacks charm, and the screenplay--by Peter Packer of TV's "My Friend Flicka"--is third-rate, with odd shifts of tone and small plot holes. The best part of the film is the beginning, in which Scott alone--nice viewpoint pans!--enters the almost empty fort, slowly discovering the truth of the Little Big Horn. The ending involving Custer's back-up horse is cool too. But not cool enough.
