Other users are right in how dumb the characters and plot are, but it short-sells how grimy and disgusting the visuals are. The production designer and location scouter deserve praise. The biggest issue is the pointless wife/child characters, who do nothing but render the film fifteen minutes too long. This is a lot closer to a great movie than I'd anticipated which makes it all the more a shame. Maybe it just needed a better director? Oh, and the final villain looks like George Costanza.

Exciting & tense with a cool soundtrack, all the same the pacing is slow, which means although you feel like you can't get up & pee, most any time is a good time. Filmed primarily in the dark, no we don't get to see the snuff film, nor are the brief glances at perverse sexuality much of an enticement, but all the same watching a cool/deadpan Nick unwrap a story works enough magic.

It starts out like it might be decent but once the film goes into the "seedy underground" of hardcore pornography it just gets absurd. Watching Nicholas Cage walk from creepy-basement porn dealer directly asking "do you have any snuff?" just defies any sort of believe in his detective skills if he can't even master basic subtlety. The soundtrack has a few decent tracks but the majority isn't very impressive either. With a subject as gruesome as this the movie better be amazing and this isn't.

This was an interesting concept, but unfortunately entirely too predictable. Joaquin Phoenix wasn't creepy enough to pull off the guy who knows all there is to know about the porno underground.

It tries to be badass. It tries to be awesome. It tries to be too over-the-top. But, it fails at almost all of this. The whole cast of characters are boring, cliche', and just have cardboard personalities. Schumacher just need's to retire.

Cheap, cheesy, campy, dumb. In other words, hilariously bad. Cage is overacting so much, I love it. Watching his reaction to the snuff film for the first time is some major laughs. The wife and daughter were so unnecessary and unneeded in the film. So was the whole smoking bit and the mystery man following him around was really poorly done. Wow a 60 for Schumacher is really gonna boost his current average of 18.

This is admittedly my kind of film, and even though it suffers from being occasionally off in its tone, it's an incredibly dark, grisly film about one of the darker subject matters you could put in a story. A restrained Cage works well against a terrific cast who do the crazy for him.

Very solid movie. Raises a lot of moral questions, and it's good at making the feel of the film get creepier and creepier as it goes on. Still, nothing especially remarkable about this makes it a must-see. It's still the usual Hollywood fare. If you want a movie that depicts a descent into filth/debauchery, watch Auto Focus.

may i am repeating myself but joel shuhmacher is a not a good director. he is not really bad (as michael winner) but he has no soul in his movies. he is "just" a nice guy and because of this he gets the jobs from the studios. and btw you do not create suspense and horror by showing the murder, but by not showing and just seeing the face of nicolas cage, when he nearly vomits. take a look at halloween (the original one) and learn - you see nothing and you are frightened to death!

the gruelling depiction of the hardcore porn industry and its depths was pretty good. you almost want to wash your eyes after all the dirty imagery. everything else was a bit too heavy on the melodramatic side, especially the further along it went. the whole "upstanding man gets corrupted by darkness"-act was way overdone, especially the times cage kills someone. his "victims" practically legitimize it with crappy talk on how evil they are and stuff. that was just silly.

Cage is a bland lead, but the supporting roles are all enjoyable. Phoenix especially, and who doesn't love watching Stormare ham it up? Plot-wise it gets pretty ridiculous and unfortunately becomes too formulaic in the second half, but I still enjoyed the atmosphere most of the time.

Starts out slow as the plot gets interviewed and undressed by the audience. Things step up a notch once the Pheonix foreplay sequences begin. The film has a natural, kind of reverse snuff themed climax once Gandolfini gets a handgun facial. The aftermath is more fluff than anything else. Highlight is watching Cage pretending he is actually shocked by female abuse.

Fantastic plot, not a bad performance from Cage, Phoenix makes it for me. Noticed a blooper with the boom pole and some pretty cruddy frame interlacing towards the end on my DVD copy. Nevertheless it kept me very entertained and I can watch it again and again and enjoy it. Would have been better if Fincher directed it.
