Summary: A private detective is hired to track down the computer hacker known as Trinity. But as he gets close his goal, reality takes a weird turn for him. (imdb)
The only Animatrix to fuse a separate, non-sci-fi genre with The Matrix to aesthetic and narrative success. Love the noir-styled visuals and hardboiled detective narration (not to mention the detective's badass cat), and it has the best bittersweet ending of the Animatrix shorts. It was cool to see Trinity (voiced by Carrie-Anne Moss and everything).
One of the few highlights from the disappointing "Animatrix" collection. Combining black-and-white noir with the Matrix story was an inspired idea, and it's well-executed by the world-class director Shinichiro Watanabe. He uses his typical mix of comedy, gritty action, and a constantly developing story. At its core, it's really very simple, and makes no sense when you think about it. (Why would they hire detectives to begin with?) But "decent" is a step above the other Animatrix shorts.
This gets closer to the flavor of the original Matrix film than the other Animatrix shorts do, but it's adolescent, it has a non-ending, and it's ultimately rather silly
Finally, a short that deserves a mention out of the 'Animatrix' collection. Really good animation and a stable script that's great to follow for what it lasts.
