Extremely witty, and more complex than it appears on first viewing. The Kirk Douglas character is more than a little irritating, but the Linda Darnell and Paul Douglas relationship really makes the picture.

You ask yourself, "Which guy was it?" after the first ten minutes & the question isn't answered until the literal last minute. Comedy, drama & suspense...just might be the perfect movie.

I normally hate voice overs - Fight club being one of the worst examples of voice over in film history - but dammit if this film(1949) hasn't the smartest way of making the VO interplay with the events of the story. Still, the flashback structure, which Bergman uses in his "Kvinnors väntan" from 1952, is a bit too clumsy for my taste and the ending was very typical hays code'ish. I also had some problems engaging with the right characters, yeah, you'll know if you see it.

One of the many movies from the forties which makes me question why I ever watch movies from other decades. The script is simultaneously smart and down to earth. Linda Darnell is stunning.

It's got a terrific premise: a woman sends a letter to her three acquaintances, telling them that she's run off with one of their husbands... but doesn't say which one. The letter-writer is never seen, but is constantly referred to as a rival in the flashbacks, and she provides the wry voiceover narration. The film doesn't break any cinematic ground but the script is witty and incisive, the personal conflicts are genuine and compelling, and the performances are all very good.
