In the right hands this probably could have been a really great movie. As it is, it's just too neat and glossy, and some of it is unconvincing (I admit I'm picky about that). It has a middling first act (by fault of corny voice-over narration), an inspired, touching middle act and then the third act is middling again. I really wish someone talented would clean up the script a bit and remake this as the masterpiece it was meant to be.

The beginning was excellent, great narration by Ethan Hawke. When the Americans encounter the German platoon, it's credibility dwindles. A snow fight??
