Summary: Cliff and Cydney (Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich) are an adventurous young couple celebrating their honeymoon by backpacking to one of the most beautiful, and remote, beaches in Hawaii. Hiking the wild, secluded trails, they believe theyve found paradise. But when the pair comes across a group of frightened hikers discussing the horrifying murder of another newlywed couple on the islands, they begin to question whether they should turn back... (imdb)

The words "starring Milla Jovovich & Steve Zahn" should strike fear into any seasoned cinema-goer but this effort could almost be considered watchable if it wasn't for the ridiculous "I hope they don't..." twist 2/3 in, and the hammy, over-directed finale that follows. I like Timothy Olyphant, and once again the 'new Bill Paxton' emerges head-and-shoulders above the rest of the cast.

Loved the American Jedi personified by Timothy Olyphant! He is responsible for at least 30 points! Hated the "I can see it from a mile away" twist (Uh, havent I seen than in an Angelina Jolie film?) and the terrible, terrible ending...

I'm sure glad they spent a half hour explaining the plot twist. I don't think the 2nd graders who saw this film would have understood without it.

The film features endless blabber that tries to be good dialogue, only to fail miserably, sounding moronic and ridiculous instead. The first 40+ minutes are a big pile of nothing, and don't even succeed in building a tense mood. Worse, the "twist" was painfully predictable as soon as the ex-Marine said "red snapper" a mere twenty minutes in. Of course, that doesn't make the reveal any less stupid or plausible. A crappy and forgettable movie.

Some movies find it necessary to offer their more mentally challenged viewers an 'explain everything' scene, in order to make sure they 'got' what was going down. Well, in A Perfect Getaway, good Mr. Twohy is kind enough to give us both monologue and flashback...and about 15 minutes of it at that. If Milla Jovovich's lack of talent didn't insult your intelligence enough, this blatant display of over-exposition will. Why the 70? Olyphant is great, as always.

I can make a film about a woman who lives in a microwave, where she sells condoms to giant apes who have suffered from severe radiation and experimental mutations, boasting IQs of 180 while tragically carrying a deadly virus after the war of the worlds in 2097. Just 'cus you think you got a good idea, don't make it so! The film annoyingly catered to the genre while smothering the audience. It was like the writer wound up for a haymaker and missed, landing foolishly on his ass while all watched.

A Perfect Getaway's first hour provides a decent amount of suspense, but the film's third act provides a template for everything not to do at a film's conclusion. Characters 180 and exposition falls heavy handed from the sky as Deus Ex Machinas shoot from all corners of the screen to resolve the overly obvious twist. This would be the first film I would show in a film school as "what not to do when writing a script."

For what it is, A Perfect Getaway is a good mystery thriller that will keep you guessing right up until the end. That's more or less all you need with this type of film, so I guess it accomplishes that task. It does feel deceptive and manipulative at some points, especially when you find out what's really going on here, but it stays entertaining throughout, and because of that, is worth a watch.

Those recent thrillers really try hard to invent something new, just to end up with stupidest twists (also see Orphan). It actually spends half an hour explaining the twist, but it doesn't help to make it look less ridiculous. Mix that up with bad acting and shallow characters and you've got the picture. Jovovich is way past her best days as an actress. B-thriller that doesn't have anything else but beautiful locations to offer.

"A Perfect Getaway" has an interesting approach to the thriller genre, and it excels in gritty fashion. Certain aspects keep it from greatness or even cult status, such as 10-minute segment devoted to catching up audiences to the plot mechanics. In fact, the movie eventually feels like a film built around deceit of the audience, but I enjoyed it anyway. It's a consistently entertaining movie.

Visually well done, but painfully predictable. When they advertise 'you'll never guess who it is'... that tells you right there. Amateur, cliche writing that pretends not to be.
