One of the most beautiful movie-compositions i´ve ever seen and heard. It´s like Bunken already said, Ford walks on the path of Wong Kar Wai, and that is very promising.

The visual style and use of colour in the film is spectacular and though this is Tom Ford's directorial debut his artistic talent is certainly evident. A film with this small of a cast hangs on the performance of it's lead and Colin Firth doesn't disappoint. He is a superb actor and ensures the film is genuine. Certainly A Single Man is a tragic film but throughout it is a message of hope.

It's a career-best turn from Colin Firth that ensures A Single Man's minor, though enticing success. For while Tom Ford's use of light and color evocatively aestheticizes his protagonist's post-tragedy sense of stasis and despair, it takes the performance of a great actor to cement any place as something beyond the realm of passively intriguing grieving piece. In contrast to his prior, largely for-hire work, Firth proves to be the single man for the job.

Intense, interesting conversations, smooth and remarkably light at moments, a brilliant piece of acting with just the face: it just speaks. The end is quite cliché, though, not really adds up considering the individuality of this movie.

Firth's exceptional performance is the anchor for this emotional drama, which unfortunately is too ambitious in its juggling of various characters and themes. The comparably brief running time means that story threads and characters are left dangling, which is a shame as an exceptional cast struggles to being life and credibility to them. Direction is also too self-conscious and pretentiously 'arty' at times, which results in an ocassional sense of disconnect. Worth your time for Firth.

I can't express the sort of experience I had with A Single Man very well. Suffice it to say that's what it is: closer to an experience than a viewing. It's a gorgeously riveting film - only a few times a little overdone - that relies completely on Colin Firth, who demonstrates not only can he carry a film of such emotional weight, he can be the reason it transcends melodrama. In other words, the film is good, but with Firth in every scene, the film is fantastic.

I have always found that an esthetically pleasing movie appeals better to me emotionally. "A Single Man" is doubtlessly easy on the eye, but there is also a well told story about loss and the pain of having to conceal your identity. Sometimes the visuals work for the story, sometimes they are just there on their own merit, but they consistently lift the viewing experience.

Wow... Beautiful film! Very Wong Kar Wai slow motion, blended with multiple camera angles and a strong performance by Colin Firth guides you into the inner core of George's sadness. Such small details as a shift in colorgrading could seem irrelevant and overdoing it, but here it absolutely works to perfection! "And then it comes..."

I'm not exactly a connaisseur of gay cinema, so I might be talking out of my ass when I say that 'A Single Man' is a refreshingly mature and intelligent drama about longing, mourning and the inhability to give in to desire. Like with 'Brokeback Mountain' the issue of homosexuality is suitably secondary. For the film geek it's noteworthy for the ingenius use of colorgrading, so simple and elegantly applied, that it's mindboggling that it hasn't been done before.

i enjoyed this movie, but it's slightly lacking in substance and ford's rapid change of color tone to signify emotion is used as a crutch and ends up being disheartening to the over all good direction. in the end this movie failed at making me empathetic leaving only my imagination to create the sorrow i expected the main character felt.
