Summary: This observational film provides a rare glimpse into North Korea, one of the world's least known societies. The film following two young gymnasts, 13 year old Pak Hyon Sun and 11 year old Kim Song Yun, and their families for over eight months in the lead up to the Mass Games -- involving a cast of thousands in a choreographed socialist realism spectacular -- the biggest and most elaborate human performance on earth. Fascinating and really the only one of the many docs about North Korea that tells it from this perspective; usually those gymnastics practices are just filmed from a passing bus while a government minder yells at the cameraman in the background. Using Enya for the climax is an epic fail, though.

A very interesting subject, which would have benefited from a slightly more subtle treatment.

The most stylish documentary I've seen, by far. And a fascinating subject.

Interesting, not fascinating. Could have been improved by cutting it to an hour or so.

I saw the BBC version of this documentary. Very good, although I thought the Enya was severely out of place during the Mass Games montage. But aside from that a very informative and terrifying look at the Korean masses and Kim Jong Il's control over them with propaganda.
