This isn't how I remember the book, but it works really well on its own merits. Really good pacing, some very good visuals and superb characterizations. Ronald Colman gives quite the performance.

A strong performance from Colman that injects the film with life and gravitas whenever he appears on screen. The rest of the film lags a bit in comparison, but is still quite good as it is carried along by the solid story from Dickens and several likable side characters. The last twenty minutes or so are excellent, with copious amounts of Colman and the girlfight starring Edna May Oliver.

A very compelling story, populated by memorable, likable characters, graced with intriguing drama, and commenting on the cruelty and injustice perpetuated by both sides of the French Revolution. Some characterizations and flourishes are a bit too much but for the most part it's a rock solid film, easily watchable and quite enjoyable. Excellent production value and strong performances. It made me want to read the novel, which is perhaps the finest thing an adaptation can accomplish.
