What would have been astonishing in 1902, probably became dated by the 30's forgotten in the 50's and now all over youtube in the noughties.

Georges Méliès wrote, produced, designed (both the sets and the costumes), directed, photographed & starred in this unforgettable piece of famous early cinema. Considered the first ever sci-fi film it demonstrated all the best tricks Méliès had learned in his previous couple of hundred short films & stands as a perfect example of his wit and charm which flows from this film & can be enjoyed on YouTube today thanks to being in the public domain.

This is really the type of early cinema that I enjoy, these delightful flights of fancy, these outbursts of creativity. These guys all look like they're having a blast.

Really quite lovely. It is raw simplicity and utterly absurd and that is what is so great about this funny, charming and at times even magical film as well over a hundred years later it still holds up remarkably well.

This is a wonder and a national treasure. Put on your time-travelling hat and jump back 108 years; this one shouldn't be hard to find on the Internet and it is a must watch for every serious film nut. It kick-started the idea of sci-fi with such style and such visuals. Méliès was a genius ahead of his time and whenever I'm bored, I jump back and watch this or The Conjurer. It is amazing what could be done with film at this point in time. Put yourself in their shoes and be amazed and shocked.

Quite an inventive film (I found it really cool how the aliens "died"), but doesn't have much going for it and it also very confusing due to a lack of dialogue (which should absolutely not happen to silent films). ShogunRua is right; The Smashing Pumpkins tribute to the film is awesome!

The first ever no-bullshit kick-ass sci-fi featurs a few pompous astronauts, perky yet gentle aliens, and 'The Moon' as a supporting character. Too bad the real moon isn't nearly as much fun as the one seen here...

Cute and absolutely charming. More films should feature space mushrooms. I loved the tricks that were used to suggest depth, like the design of the space bullet-rocket. A true classic.

Films sure have come a long way. It doesn't help matters that the first four minutes, half the film, were a complete waste. The Smashing Pumpkins video was much, much better.

It is surprising that this movie is good. Probably one of the first movies ever made, the scenes are just amazingly artistic, graphic and imaginative for it's time.

The two main things that make motion pictures exhilarating and distinct from the theater are editing and camera movement. This film is so raw in both of these areas that it actually serves to highlight how vital they are for the medium. This short film features a static, silent, three minute long shot of people talking. The silliness and vitality of the second half has a slight redeeming quality, but yeah...meh.
