Summary: French film pioneer Georges Méliès began his career as a filmmaker in 1896, just a few months after watching motion pictures for the first time in his life. Being a stage magician himself, he quickly noticed the enormous potential the new invention had as a form of entertainment, and immediately after the show made an offer to buy the Lumières' Cinématographe. The brothers refused, but that didn't stop Méliès, who decided to make his own devises based on the brother's work and the Bioscope camera... (IMDB Comments)

Melies the magician, again. Limited bag of tricks, but he uses them well. These little films of his always seem to be so charming. Perhaps the word for which I am looking is "showmanship"

Even before the turn of the century Melies was showing his great talent for film effects. Though this is short and simple, the effects are flawless.

Totally awesome. For such a short film, its amazing how many camera tricks are used. The premise is very simple, but it's the most pleasurable minute I've spent in a while.
