4/5's of "The Maltese Falcon" goes to war, but it ain't the same without Peter Lorre! Gee, wouldn't it have been great if Lorre had used Mr. Moto make-up and played Greenstreet's smiling minion? Seriously, Huston's direction is very fine, Bogart shows flashes of bitterness and savagery, and Astor--with her beautiful been-around-the-block face--makes you continually suspicious of motive. If the rah-rah war-time script weren't so corny at the end, this might have been a classic.
