Summary: A comedy set in the summer of 1987 and centered around a recent college grad (Eisenberg) who takes a nowhere job at his local amusement park, only to find it's the perfect course to get him prepared for the real world. (imdb)
Nice performances and chemistry between the two leads. The story was nothing remotely special, just a forgettable cliché really. On the plus side there were some nice 80s-style costumes, and the dialogue was mostly smart, especially the incidental background dialogue. And a good soundtrack. This film would be dead in the water without that soundtrack.
After Mottola equated nostalgia and kitsch in Superbad, I was taken aback by the maturity, subtlety and weight of Adventureland. It's a smart film, melancholy really, interested in the disappointments of the past and filmed in a way that evokes the ephemerality of memory. So, yes, quite lovely.
1) "headband guy" is now No. 2 to Jar-Jar Binks in terms of characters originally designed for laughs, who are not only NOT FUNNY but are actively hate-worthy. 2) Enough with Reed and Bowie being signifiers of "underground cool". It's character development by musical taste...lazy. 3) Stewart's character was completely awful and I had zero sympathy for her. 4) Unexpected vomiting? Not really funny. 5) Hader's stuff felt dropped in from another film. Points only for "it's still a good book."
Clearly Greg Mottola decided the Superbad path was the one to follow. He edges ahead a few years, focusing on college-aged youth who are all spun around by their romantic anguish and general horniness. Noticeably autobiographical in nature, the film is amusing enough, but also shaggy to the point of being aimless. Nothing sticks beyond the suspicion that Kristen Stewart has only developed one emotion--sullen self-pity--in her acting repertoire.
A smart, resonant semi-rom-com with an excellent ensemble, just don't expect Superbad. This has a lot more in common with movies like Nick and Norah, American Graffiti and Dazed and Confused, there's no pie here.
What a phenomenal comedy. It's everything a film like this should be: funny, heartfelt, realistic, genuine. Mottola is far more perceptive here than with Superbad. He also has a much better cast to work with. Eisenberg and Stewart were perfect choices for the leads and the Hader/Wiig combination simply can't go wrong. The soundtrack choices were expected, but I don't think that's a bad thing. Easily the best film I've seen from this year. theficionado called it lovely - it really is.
This is a "fine" film. It is a little deeper/more mature teen comedy that happens to be set in the late 80's. Ok. I was entertained, I laughed, enjoyed some heartfelt moments, and rolled my eyes at a typical ending. Not real sure why this film is getting so much buzz...it will be mostly forgotten in a year or two.
Very well crafted comedy in the vein of Apatow and Superbad comedies (go figure) with enough laughs and enough charcter to keep it going and a very worthy entry in this whole sect of movies.
I thought this was a very well-made movie. I expected more raunchy humor, since the director has been known for more stuff in that direction. I was surprised when it turned out to be more quirky, more like Juno than Superbad. I loved the characters and Kristen Stewart actually delivered a very believable performance. I enjoyed myself-- plenty of laughs and quite a bit of heart to it.
15/9/9 - I really wanted to dislike this film, but I found myself utterly charmed and won over by it. A coming of age romance up there with Almost Famous.
This is a great drama and comedy film and being set in the 80's really worked for this film, Eisenberg and Stewart were great in this film and Eisenburg is now set to be a holloywood star in the following years (from great performances in this and Zombieland!), must see film of 2009.
Kinda lost it for me with the stapled on happy ending. Otherwise, carefully crafted of not, this captures the time rather perfectly. More fun to watch than to live it.
blah, blah, blah... I work at a fair... yada, yada, yada I like this girl but I am such a romantic... Ugh. As I wrote this review the movie's score dropped even more. Props to crashing your car while drinking and driving and not getting a ticket. I would think that's tough to do. And the annoying version of Ryan Reynolds was in this one too. Didn't find much to laugh, cry or ponder at during the film. I did enjoy the sucker punch at the end.
With expectations to be seen, just like a simple teen comedy, Adventureland is surprising. Not that "Superbad" was bad, is very funny, but another copy would be unnecessary. But this film goes much further. It is an interesting mix of drama, romance and comedy, with a pleasant reading of the 80s.
Not afraid to do something as unfashionable as wear its heart on its sleeve, Adventureland is one of those rare films that manages to be moving without being manipulative, romantic without being contrived and genuinely humorous. One of the most perfect teen romance films since Say Anything%u2026 [Full Review]
A mature version of Superbad. Not really funny, more of a drama but there are a few laughs. Kristen Stewart was the best part of the movie, she gives a very believable performance. I also enjoyed Bill Hader a lot. Sweet mustache. It looks like Jesse Eisenberg went to the Michael Cera school for acting, the 2 almost seemed interchangeable. And Frigo was a douche, hated that character.
I liked the delicate pace and realism of the movie quite a bit, but the story was pretty weak and obvious. It was nice to see a departure from the standard feel for a movie like this and Martin Starr is my hero, so overall, a good time.
"Adventureland" has some solid teenage drama to it, even if it's not entirely funny. It does feature some winning performances, a decent script, a few laughs, but most importantly it comes across as an honest, low-key movie.
Times have changed, and directors have grown. Mottola hits it out of the park again with a charming comedy that should strike the right chords with most people. Although less funny than "Superbad", it proposes a sense of maturity and genuine skill that few films have. Can't wait for more of his work.
A really fun watch. I think that the characters in the movie are really fun and work well together. Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader have a ton of chemistry and make magic whenever they are on screen. I was actually expecting a different comedy to drama ratio, but I was happy with what I got. The drama was well done and didn't seem out of place at all.
