Summary: In this futuristic sci-fi thriller set 400 years in the future, Charlize Theron stars as Aeon Flux, the top underground operative at war with the totalitarian regime governing what appears to be a perfect society. But is this perfect life hiding a perfect lie? Aeon is on the front lines of a rebellion that will reveal a world of secrets. (Paramount Pictures)
Seems like the director was too busy gawking at Theron in her various tight outfits to worry about an interesting story. Saw this with a computer geek, who loved it, so apparently that's all you really need! Whilst she is pretty pretty, it doesn't cover up the fact that this story is a mix up of stolen ideas from far greater works of art: There's a bit of Dark City, 1984, Matrix - even Equilibrium - and I just feel ... wait. You never read beyond "Charlize Theron in tight outfits" did you?...
Story is much easier to understand than the cartoon. The entire movie could have been slightly darker in theme. But it is at least thought provoking, even if it is in a minor way.
I went in with low expectations and partly expected to have to stop the movie because of the main character tumbling around in skimpy outfits. There's an element of that here, and that's annoying. The movie did surprise me however in that the skimpy-outfitness doesn't actually get as bad as I thought it might, and the plot is fun. There are several opportunities to rely too heavily on a gimmick of this scifi universe they play in, and I don't think they did that. I'd watch it again.
