Disappointing performances, lackluster writing, and pedestrian production hamper this effort. Only the star, young Keke Palmer, really stands out. Still, a reasonable thing to pick up if you are looking for a flick for the whole family.

A picture about how the breaking down of insecurity, class and race barriers may lend itself to simultaneous pride and glory, writer-director Doug Atchinson's Akeelah and the Bee is the kind of movie social dramatists should aspire to emulate. And not simply in a sense relative to the ethnicity of its primary characters but in the simple - and simply effective - marriage of weighty theme with pop approachability. Its artistry is eminently apparent.
