The Mexican Caribbean's stunning Banco Chinchorro, home to the world's second largest coral reef, provides setting and inspiration for this effortlessly beautiful film, which follows a Mayan father and young son as they spend a summer working (and playing) along the coast. (sffs.org)

Though the Banco Chinchorro is clearly beautiful to look at in the film, the relationship between Jorge and Natan is even more incredible. The depiction of their relationship while together before Natan returns to his mother in Italy reminds fathers and aspiring fathers what it means to have a loved one and why it's always important to cherish them. Nestór, as the father of Jorge and grandfather to Natan, bestows life lessons about the simplicity of life at sea and enjoying the life around us.

watching this right after EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP was certainly something. i'm not sure there's a more ill-fitting double bill in the history of cinema. o.O

"Alamar is as much about the way a coat of yellow paint looks spread across wooden planks as it is the tender regard a father bestows on his son or the manner by which a lobster is speared and stripped." - Andrew Schenker

Beautiful, yet bittersweet, film of love overcoming vast cultural impediments.

Sometimes all a film needs to do is transport you to another place and mood, and this one does that wonderfully. The details of sea-going life are presented slowly but gently, not laboriously. The relationships between father and son, grandfather and father, man and nature are beautiful. It's a serene, inviting existence. By the end, without any grand revelations, we feel Natan has learned something valuable about the gifts life has to give, and will carry that with him for the rest of his days.

If there's anything more boring than fishing, it's WATCHING someone fish.

More of an episodic capturing of a place, mood and relationship, than a narrative film - but that, I'll admit, is allowed too. Rather than getting deeply immersed in the characters and events, it's more about just letting these 70 laid-back minutes wash over you, and soaking up the tone of life on a penniless Mexican's fishing boat. A soothing experience, even if it's not really what I go to the movies for. Kudos to the director for doing his own thing, I guess.

I usually don't mind movies that have low to zero stakes, but this one was a step too far for me. Imagine being asked to watch somebody's home video footage of the time they took their kid on a beach vacation, but you don't know either of them. It's like that, but at least the scenery is nice and there's a great bird.
