Strange but compelling drama spotlights Close in a magnificent performance (and long-term pet project) even if her Nobbs is bizarrely enigmatic as to his motives and view of the world, which is a problem the film can't quite overcome because of the character's very nature. Wasikowska is also excellent in support, though the subplot with her boyfriend feels underdeveloped, disorganised and somewhat contrived. While the film is not a total success, it remains intriguing throughout.

A drama that seems content to be watchable and well-intentioned and nothing more.

I read in most reviews of this movie that it’s a pretty mediocre film, with a great performance by Glenn Close. I can’t really disagree with that. Close is one of my favourite actresses and she was brilliant again here. The story was a bit meandering. It’s quite an interesting story, but the screenplay just simply needed to be better in order to service the talented performers. I did quite like the ending though; it wasn’t too ‘Hollywood’, which was nice.

Close and McTeer are terrific and beautifully insightful in this little tragedy about identity and longing that could have used more push in the directing department. Still, there are plenty of little moments that are worthy enough to watch and savior the film.

It’s a sad film and an ultimately tragic tale, but emotional investment is scarce since the pace of the film is painfully slow at times and the overall direction is quite lacklustre. For such a passion project, this film felt quite uninspired. Close gives it her all and she’s far and away the highlight of the film, but director Rodrigo García clearly wasn’t as invested in the story.

A lot hangs on Mia Wasikowska in this and she fails to deliver. Basically this is what a lot of the big British actors will be stuck doing now that Potter is over. Not a bad period film, but not great either. Doesn't help that the main character is a bit of a robot, I kept thinking of Bicentennial Man...

There's a bit too much going on in the third act, but what makes Albert Nobbs such a good film is that Close's titular character is so fully realized, that, unlike so many similar films, she exists outside of her sexual transgressions. Nobbs is pathetic and lonely, smart and neurotic, confused, beautiful, everything the perfect tragic protagonist should be.

"Close never provides an entry point into the soul of this complex (and otherwise nameless) person, making it harder and harder to view the character as sympathetic." - R. Kurt Osenlund

It's an embarrassing film, if you ask me. Janet McTeer is the only one worth a nomination come Oscar time.

Unfortunately it`s not more than an average period movie (It`s like watching a lousy version of Downton Abbey), but the performances of Glenn Close and Janet McTeer are amazing and so believable... I`ll be happy if Glenn Close is recognized as the Best Actress, but I`ll be thrilled to see McTeer rewarded in this wonderful supporting role..

Most of the points are for Brendan Gleeson and maybe a couple for Glenn Close.

Nobbs is a powerful character, and Glenn, who stars, co-writes and co-produces, manages to impersonate a man in a properly tidy, I-can't-take-anymore way. But García seems interested in just shooting the script and fails to provide any subtlety to the story.

An extremely positive surprise, Glenn Close is Oscarworthy, the other leading actors are all terrific and the Sinéad song earns some extra points as well. I liked; very much so.

It has its moments that keep it on the good side of mediocre, but they're a bit too few and far between. The story is...weird, the characters too distant, and though Glenn Close gives a typically great performance, her script flounders a bit at times. Also suffers from uninspired directing and surprisingly little emotional pull.

The Oscar is as good as Close's. She's excellent! (Edit: I should totally have gone with "The Oscar Race for Best Actress is Closed". Oh well.)
