Caine's breakthrough performance certainly is an interesting one. Alfie is impenitent, callas and without moral inhibitions, measuring his success in life with saudid promiscuousness and demeaning all he encounters. It's a miracle Caine managed to infuse any charm into such a role but at moments Alfie often seems vulnerable and tormented by his life, even if his narration and egotistical nature often denies his wavering sense of self righteousness. An imorral but strangely facinating classic.

Caine plays Alfie as an unrepentant cad, staring right into the camera and impassively explaining his rationalizations for callous behavior towards the women he slyly collects. The film is hampered by its episodic nature, but the structure undoubtedly seemed more novel in the mid-sixties. What endures is the craftiness of Caine, fearlessly playing his role without imploring for sympathy, but still allowing glimmers of vulnerability to show through.

It was pretty good as a comedy until it started trying to trade that off for a misguided attempt at pathos. Alfie just isn't a relatable or likable enough character to fully pull off the film's attempt at commentary on relationships. Still, he is interesting enough to be entertaining.

This is the film which catapulted Caine to stardom and his performance as an unscrupulous womanizing male is excellent. The romantic excursions are honestly portrayed.

It's ok. Michael Caine does a decent job with the lead role but I honestly thought the more recent version with Jude Law was a much better film. Caine's portrayal of Alfie just isn't likeable. I don't care what happens to him. Law's version has far more depth and is generally a lot more fun to watch as well.

What's it all about, Alfie? Though this box office hit was seen as a sophisticated take on current sexual mores upon release, it now seems a dated but engaging comedy, notable chiefly for its performances.

an utterly mesmerizing performance by caine, the forth wall breaks make this movie a must see. this is an unbeatable story of a man who seems to have a heart of stone and in spite of himself cannot see the chink in his armor. the writing and direction in conjunction with a spellbinding performance simply had me in the grips of awe for the majority of this movie.

Caine is just perfect as the amoral mysognist antihero, and the selfishness and cowardice is communicated brilliantly, especially when directly addressing the viewer. Seldom can the use of the word "it" have ever been more disparaging. The narrative does drift a little though, and marks must come off for that.

Beautifully observed time capsule which subtly and intelligently delves into the social and sexual mores of the mid-60s in a far more successful manner than most other 60s films. Aided immeasurably by Caine's finely observed performance, who manages to make Alfie a by turns reprehensible, yet oddly endearing and touching character, and terrific support work by Merchant and (briefly) Elliott. Director Gilbert also handles potentially awkward narration (direct to the audience) surprisingly well.

Alfie can have any woman he wants but can he get want he really needs? When he finds out it may be too late. When Michael Caine turns away from the camera at the end of the film and the song asks \"What's It All About...? you know you've seen a really good movie.
