It is as if Mann had the tools but did not know what to do with them. First 10 minutes is just awesome - good editing very intense and unusual (in a good way) boxing choreography. It is a character piece, but the insight into Ali's personality is superficial. We never know why he is doing his thing and what makes him go. In almost 3 hours, we learn very little, and the question for Michael Mann is why film such a dull movie about such an interesting person?

The cinematography catches the gorgeous yet ostentatious and flaunting tone of several boxing tournaments and arenas, and Will Smith plays a perfect impersonation of Muhammad Ali but near the end his gimmick grew slighty boring and he soon descended into prosaicness. Jamie Foxx outshines him by a long shot. Still a good movie by Mann although this is going nowhere towards his chosen path of greatness.

Great, long movie about the best boxer all time. Despite of that I expected more box-scenes. Ali's big mouth and hilarious, funny talk against his boxing-opponents were awesome like :"What's my name mother fucker". The last boxing-scene against Foreman was incredible good. Music very good.

Will Smith is a fantastic Muhammad Ali but by the end of the film I really didn't feel like I knew him anymore than I did at the beginning. Having recently watched the biopic Amadeus (which is admittedly very loosely based on historical fact) I think the bar was simply set too high. While I loved the cinematography during the boxing fights and Will Smith's acting I still can't say I thought the movie on a whole was anything more than good.

A wonderfully lyrical opening sequence--detailing Muhammad Ali's career-making first victory over Sonny Liston--belies the fact that what comes after is the standard "greatest hits" biopic template, though at least ALI is clever enough to stick to the champ's most tumultuous and fascinating decade. There is far too much subject matter to unpack sufficiently, but it gets to the heart of Ali's enduring appeal and his unusual heroism. Will Smith shines playing a character instead of a persona.

Could be better, for the great story of a great fighter. But the film is confusing and even with a long movie, you can not see solid information about the life of Ali. However, well acted and well produced.

Michael Mann is the king of potential. Hell, he even gave a first 15 minutes of brilliance, only to let loose another 120 of mediocrity. It may be the fault of the inherent nature of the Bio-Epic, but the film was much less interesting than the man.

This film opens with a sequence so close to perfect that it is easily one of Mann's greatest cinematic triumphs. With a sort of rhythm, it establishes a time and place so vividly that it becomes a masterful symbiosis of emotion and politics. The film's fights are a complete effort in sound and image; shots swing and dance about the ring, keeping the flow taut, while some truly great sound mixing provides the heavy breathing, the mutable crowd reactions, and the strong impacts of the punches.

Putting aside the fact that Michael Mann directing this is rather *thinking emoji*, he does a very competent job with it. Desperately needed an editor to trim down a bunch of 10-minute montage scenes though.

Michael Mann should stick to taut, tense thrillers. If an hour had been cut, it would have been a much better movie. Ali does deserve a grat biopic, but this wasn't it.

Uneven biopic rescued and redeemed by wonderful performances all round, starting with Smith's extraordinary turn in the lead and Voight's wonderfully bizarre Howard Cosell. Overall film suffers because it uneasily compromises a flavour of America in the 60s-70s with a skimpy portrait of Ali himself, who is viewed at a distance as a baffling enigma. This makes much of the drama inherently difficult to connect with, though the fight scenes are excellent, and direction overall is most impressive.

Wow. Long film... long, drawn out film. Definately more about Ali's life than the actual fights, so don't expect something like 'Rocky' here. More of a drama, less of an action film. But, still a pretty good if you keep that in mind.

This is an epic story, but it doesn't really feel like that in the movie. Mostly there's nothing wrong with the cast (and I say mostly because I loathe Jada) and nothing wrong with the cinematography here, but I just felt so disconnected from the story. No specific relationship, no specific feeling, no amazing scene. The things were there but they were lukewarm and the soundtrack choices just underlined that. A lot could have been fixed with a more concise script.

ikinci izleyiş, director's cut: en incelikli biyografi filmlerinden biri. öznesini kutlamayı, onu pürüzsüz bir süper kahramana çevirmek yerine anlamaya çalışmakta buluyor ve harika sinematografiyle, çağrışımlara dayanan kurgusuyla ali'yi yakalamayı beceren bir film ortaya çıkarıyor mann.

For such a multifaceted celebrity living within such troubling times and being faced with such a dilemma that reveals his hard-set virtues, this turns out to be a rather uneventful, uninspiring, and unimpressive effort. I suppose everything is decent, though Smith's encouraging acting is let down by the underwritten script, which sometimes resorts to incredibly lengthy scenes of nothing happening. At 150 minutes, it feels like I watched nothing at all.

Jamie Foxx shows why he was so underrated for so long; however, I just never bought Smith's interpretation of "The Greatest." I'd rather watch ESPN Classic and see the real deal. Pass, even though it's not a total loss.

(commemorative edition) Mann is less interested in examining the character of Ali than his symbolic role in the history of race relations in the US -- I think this is an interesting approach, I just thought this movie was kinda boring.

It's maybe the least compelling boxing movie I've ever seen, but it's still not too bad. Too bad it's so long and slow that the thought of watching it again sounds more like work than entertainment. Should go down as one of Will Smith's better performances.

During Ali's sweltering jog in Zaire, he sees images in the realms of an ancient tapestry, depicting a legendary warrior, that warrior is himself. He is confronted with his own legend, realising that his footprint is much larger than he could ever believe, and the impact of his actions aren't for him alone, but for an entire nation of people. When he beats George Foreman a heavenly rain descends onto his people, he is a living legend using his fists and fabled words to enact grand social change.

The film covers a decade in Ali's life ... from his taking the heavyweight championship from Sonny Liston in 1964 to his regaining it from George Foreman in Zaire in 1974. If you don't know a lot about Ali's life, this film isn't really going to tell you. It certainly will tell you what's happening, but it's more interested in executing long sequences that build up atmosphere and emotion than executing on a biography.
