BY FAR one of the best variants; and the only to capture the dark, politically charged undertones of the original writing. This is also one of the few that leaves you walking away with the book's intended 'how real was it' ideas. The ONLY Alice in Wonderland film to truly delve into the writer's no-so-overt study of where does the line between fantasy and reality end.

No version of Alice in Wonderland will ever reach this level of awesomeness. I'm actually already disappointed with Tim Burton's version, if only because it can't possibly be as accurate to the feel of the book as Svankmajer's version.

Definitely a bizarre adaptation. The puppets add that perfect amount of creepiness and surrealism that made Carroll's stories so wonderful and unique for its time.

Visually intriguing and pleasingly warped, but ultimately it feels hollow. The arm's length dialogue/narration and non-existent score make this world feel emptier than it should. While this leads to some frustration during the more repetitive scenes, its creativity saves it from banality. Won't blow your mind, but should at least set a little fire on top of your head.

The definitive Alice in Wonderland, although ostensibly more drab and less annoyingly pastel than other adaptations of the story, this one feels less depressingly literal and more surreal and disturbing like the book.

"Svankmajer's vision of Carroll's Alice in Wonderland is darkly humorous, imaginative, surreal and even creepy at times... All this visual fun is undone however by the annoying, repetitive idea of showing a close-up of Alice's lips saying things like 'said the rabbit' after every line of dialog is spoken."

I find this to be an intriguing way of telling the story and I have a lot of appreciation for Jan Svankmajer's creativity here. It's not creepy, but I think describing it as a little darker is the most accurate way to put it. It's not the sort of movie I can watch over and over, but every once in a while I can thoroughly enjoy it.

Almost continuing on with his short film Jabberwocky - which combined another Lewis Carroll work with his take on childhood - Svankmajer made a pretty faithful telling of the famous story as his first feature film, his trademark 'man-made' stop motion animation and surrealist imagination matching a surrealist story perfectly like a glove on a hand. It's at times grotesque and weird, other times amusing and lively, and never feels pointless.

An interesting film with some excellent puppetry and a fascinating look, but it's pacing issues do it in. Too much time is spent on single scenes with the same thing happening over and over again. The story rarely feels like it's moving at all and for such a short film it can feel twice as long at times. Still worth a view, it's a visually wonderful movie and something incredibly unique.

I can appreciate the craftsmanship that went into this production, but it never really grabbed me. Alice just moves from weird set piece to weird set piece and then it ends. The drab colors and filthy locations started to wear me down after a while.

Utterly bizarre. You'd expect an adaptation of Alice to be strange but this really goes way beyond that. It's worth watching for the wondrously creative visuals and it's unique take on a classic story. That said, it somehow felt like it was missing the adventurous spirit of Alice and was rather uninvolving and distant.

I love Svankmajer's animation and his obsession with decay and flesh. I understand the point as a surrealist for him to keep the motif of the closeups of Alice's lips after every phrase, but that didn't make it less aggravating. Would be a great movie if not for that, I feel.
