Starts out super fun and blue collary then Spielberg drowns me in some maudlin hell. I wonder if I have a guardian angel ghost subconsciously dictating out these pithy revi-ohshitheisontousbailbailbail

Well they all can't be winners. Overly sentimental, to say the least.

Pleasant but wholly unnecessary remake of _A Guy Named Joe_. A sunny tone is sustained by the amiable presence of the leads and Hepburn's brief appearance. But there's not even a glimmer of substance, which is presumably what Spielberg intended.

Not really my thing but it has its moments, mainly the ones pertaining to Audrey Hepburn.

Spielberg's long-treasured attempt to remake the '40s fantasy _A Guy Named Joe_ results in a heartfelt but contrived and corny misfire. Considering its themes of life, love, and death, this is way too cute for its own good but the actors are good and it's all reasonably entertaining in the manner of _Ghost_.

Cheesey as hell, but I don't mind it.

Good idea, but terribly slow paced and ultimately dull.

I loved the premise of this movie: an angel not ready for Heaven is sent back to Earth to guide the living, but instead he focuses on his own agendas. The acting is a tad bit overdone, but all the actors work well off each other. I don't own the DVD, but I do try to catch this one when it comes on cable, especially on a rainy day.

Warm remake of "A Guy Named Joe," one of Spielberg's favorite movies. Sparks between Dreyfuss and Hunter eventually ignite, but Goodman delivers the most heat. Hepburn makes an appearance as the angel who guides Dreyfuss. An old-fashioned tree-burner romance that includes actual footage of the 1988 Yellowstone fire.

I really enjoyed seeing this one again and raised my score. It holds up very well as a timeless love story. Other examples of the same are Ghost and What Dreams May Come.

Tremendously disappointing, coming from Spielberg, but not as horrible as some make it out to be.

The original had Spencer Tracy, in this, you get stuck with Richard Dreyfuss.

Not as good as the film of which it's a remake (_A Guy Named Joe_) but still good. Good to see Audrey Hepburn again

I originally thought this movie was about maxi-pads. It may have well been.

Silly, overdone, massively misjudged all over. Might have made a nice AMAZING STORIES episode. Maybe.

"A GUY NAMED JOE made Steven Spielberg cry when he was 12; his remake can make you want to cry at the waste of his talent and your time."--Pauline Kael, right on the money, as usual. This is so sappy that, for people with normal emotional responses, it's unwatchable.

Surprisingly pleasant and funny (especially the first half). Loved the cast.

There's some really charming, beautiful storytelling here, but I think it suffers from being too faithful a throwback to 40's filmmaking. It's one of those cases where Spielberg's passion for film is too great for his own good. Still, the cast and the charm are worth checking it out.

Maybe I'm going soft, but I thought this was a pleasure to watch. Holly Hunter and John Goodman are always enjoyable... and Dreyfuss is... fine? Also, the love of my life is one of the kids on that school bus so, it's got a special place in my heart. :)

Very little of this movie works. It feels like Spielberg and screenwriter Jerry Belson wanted to invoke the feeling of a film from the 1940's, so all of the dialogue has an odd, stylized ring to it that feels completely out of step with its setting. Consequently, none of these characters feel real, and none of their relationships are believable, so it all has really no stakes to keep you engaged.

Spielberg hallmarks on display in full force, from the charming character introduction magic of the first act, to the overly schmaltzy final scene. I'm torn. It isn't bad by any means, and fans of romantic dramas will find lots to like. But it isn't my cup of tea, and nothing in it makes me want to revisit it.
